  • Based at the ‘Home of the Brave’ in the Barossa, First Drop is making wines with flavour, texture and a splash of funk; from fruit sourced from unique vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Barossa to bring you a diverse, deliciously exciting and thought provoking line up of flavours.


    A warmer than usual spring and early summer led to quick healthy growth and a good fruit set. Together with a dry season, this led to an early start to vintage despite mild conditions and welcome rainfall in January. As a result, although harvest progressed quickly, phenology kept pace with sugar levels, leading to full flavoured wines with good acidity and ripe tannins.

    The fruit is crushed/destemmed and fermented at temperatures ranging from 20- 25°C for 8 days on skins. At the end of fermentation, it is pressed, and transferred to 3 and 4 year old French oak puncheons to undergo MLF. Post MLF, sulphur dioxide is added, and the wines mature sur lie for 8 months. Assemblage takes place at the end of this maturation period.


    Ripe raspberry and plum scents emanate from the glass followed by hints of liquorice and earthy spice. The palate is soft and fleshy and provides a fruity mouthful of dark raspberry and plum followed by a swathe of sweet spice. The finish is dry with soft velvety tannins and a lingering aftertaste of dark raspberry, plum and earthy spice.


    'Medium red/purple colour, the bouquet is smoky and charred-woody, with a medium-body and soft texture. The aftertaste has a light alcohol afterglow and some tannin firmness. A very pleasant, fairly straightforward Grenache.'
