2016 Head Red Barossa Valley Shiraz

2016 Head Red Barossa Valley Shiraz

Plump, succulent and floral thing, with a brown spices, blackberries and assorted stonefruits. Medium to full bodied, a slight meatiness, but pretty much a silky and approachable Barossa Shiraz that slips down pretty nicely.

DESCRIPTION
  • HEAD RED Shiraz is a barrel cull from Barossa vineyards including 'The Blonde', 'The Brunette' and ‘The Contrarian’ single vineyard wines. It allows a pre-view of the vintage quality to come and keeps the quality of the Single vineyard wines as high as possible.

In Alex's own words 'the Head Red Shiraz is the best value Barossa Valley I can make each vintage.'

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

The wine always receives 12 months barrel age in predominantly older French hogsheads allowing the vintage and terroir to show clearly. It’s also a chance for me to play with the old adage, 'The whole is greater than the sum of its parts'. Certainly the best value and most traditional wine style of the portfolio. Bottled unfined and unfiltered under stelvin capsule.

    TASTING NOTES

Deep red core to purple rim. Medium to full bodied palate with juicy red and black fruits, spice, plums, black cherry and pepper. Dense chewy tannins finish long and vibrant.

'A deeply coloured wine with plenty of savoury tannin backbone, but more than sufficient black fruits to put flesh on the bones, and finishes brightly.'

'Deep red colour with a good tint of purple, the bouquet is herbal and plummy, fruit-driven, and quite elegant in its uncomplicated way. There is some chocolaty richness and fleshy texture which appeals. Very good value.'
