  • Each HEAD Wine shows a distinctive house style of powerful fruit weight, elegance, freshness, finesse and balance which starts by farming vineyards sustainably and in some cases using organics and biodynamics. Yields are low/controlled, grapes are hand-picked, ferments use indigenous yeasts with some retention of stems and maturation in larger format barrels. Minimal sulphur is used during the whole wine-making process and bottling is without fining or filtration. Each Head Wine not only represents Alex Head's strong views on what makes balanced, drinkable wines for the table, but a guarantee of absolute quality, value and consistency.


    'When I came across this vineyard it was in really bad condition.  I knew it had great potential because technically it had all the things I had been looking for.  Even though it was ravaged by kangaroos, rabbits and without any water, in its first year - I produced a wonderful wine.  There is a powerful minerality that runs through this wine, perhaps due to the fact it is the highest altitude vineyard on the Western side of the Barossa at approximately 340-380m. The soils here include deep red clays and large ironstone rocks (Brunette in colour). This vineyard even attains a level of lignification in the stems allowing for partial whole bunch fermentation.  The alcohol is always at around 13.5% and these unique characters allow me the opportunity to take this wine to a level comparable with the great Syrah wines of the world.'

    'Earthy, coffee grounds, dark spices, black fruit, dried mint, a touch of tar. Full bodied, dense well-packed, almost silty tannin, richness and spice, almost sticky feel in the mouth – like slow-cooked ribs – dark spice theme continues, drying and firm on a long finish. Savoury. Deep. Throbbing. It’s excellent.'

    'Youthful, deep red/purple colour with a subdued, shy but pleasant bouquet showing emerging plum and licorice notes, and a little toasty oak. It’s medium to full-bodied and soft, with gentle texture and rounded shape, but the aromas and flavours are a bit closed. It may need more time to fully develop its personality. The potential is certainly there.'
