Dru Reschke is Koonara wines. Brother to the famous eponymously named winery, Dru's operation out of the old family estate in Coonawarra is a different kettle of fish altogether to his family's more 'prosaic' affair. Dru's passion is to remind the world of how good Coonawarra reds can be, while retaining the symbiotic charm of the region and the style of wine that put Australia on the map (read big, boisterous and full of charm). These days he farms entirely organically, and has a vineyard first mentality that seems to be doing wonders for what's in the bottle.
Ezra's Gift is named after both the fraction of wine that evaporates during cellaring and the angel that encourages writers, and helps people unlock their self-expression and abilities. Grown at a tiny 1 tonne per acre, and aged in the finest French oak 300 litre Hogshead barrels for 18 months before bottling, it is a Shiraz from the BIG end of town.

Strengthening their vines through nutritional balance and bringing in beneficial bugs means no pesticides or herbicides have been used (or needed) in Koonara's Coonawarra vineyards for over 10 years.
This wine will age well until 2030 and beyond.
Thick, dense and saturating Shiraz fruit with blue and black fruits the predominant flavours in this early stage of its life. The palate is coating with a mineral and crushed rock feel, but also ripe and lavish fruit/tannin. Intense, and satisfying!
In 1906, Henry Albert and Alice Jane Reschke came to Coonawarra to build a life for their family. The had a cattle stud. ‘Koonara’ is the name of the Reschke family property in Coonawarra. Today over 100 years on, the family still live in Coonawarra. The Cattle stud on the property is still there, but the vineyards and wine have been our passion since 1988. The land chosen for the vineyards was carefully selected out of the 3,000 acres available on the property in Coonawarra. Every year since 1991, 30 Cases of Koonara Wine has been made for family and friends. In 1999, the first Koonara wines were made available for the public, with a very limited number of cases, held back to give the wines a chance to mature in the bottle. The vineyards are naturally kept at an average of 2 tonnes or less an acre. We believe quality is paramount in creating a wine which is not only good, but consistent and age worthy each year.
Deep red colour with strong purple tints. The bouquet is mineral and metallic, with a stony crushed-rock note. It has chocolate and concentrated black fruits on the palate. Some warmth and afterglow from elevated alcohol. A big wine with lots of ripe flavour and richness. Satisfying! A very powerful Coonawarra shiraz.' (#1 Tasted Shiraz from the Coonawarra, March 2019)
NED GOODWIN - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION
This full-bodied red is a lustrous deep crimson verging on opaque out of the glass, yet the aromas suggest nothing but freshness: dark cherry, mint, black olive, beef bouillon and a sluice of bitter amaro to iodine across a wash of peppery acidity, a bit shrill, flowing long and broad. It is seldom that one meets shiraz of this quality from these parts.
