  • THE BRIEF
  • Luce della Vite follows the tradition of the Super-Tuscan wines, that rose to prominence in the 1990s. Crafting premium wines from Montalcino in Tuscany, varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet are often used alongside the native Sangiovese to create layered and powerful wines, with incredible longevity.

Luce is the estate's icon-wine, capable of representing, vintage after vintage, the excellence and uniqueness of high quality wines made in Tuscany. It's a wine born from the balance in the vineyards, and from the perfect balance between the elegance of Sangiovese and the power of Merlot – first introduced by the Frescobaldi Family in the Seventies.

Since 2002, Lamberto Frescobaldi is completely responsible for this project. In the land of Brunello di Montalcino he continues to write the history of Luce, a Super Tuscan wine appreciated all around the world.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • The 2016 vintage, distinguished as it was for its regular weather conditions free of excessive rain or heat, possesses a distinctive “terroir” effect further enhanced by the excellent conditions at the end of summer and during the harvest, which allowed the grapes to reach a wonderful ripeness. The wine possesses a rich, deep colour accompanied by an aromatic bouquet of fresh fruit and a smoothness distinguished by elegant and pleasant tannins that, while present, do not overwhelm the palate. This is a sincere and succulent wine that offers a pleasant balance of crispness, fruitiness and density, and an extremely elegant finish.

Fermentation for 12 days in stainless steel tank, with 4 weeks maceration on skins. The wine was pressed and racked to oak barriques for malolactic fermentation and maturation. Maturation for 24 months in barriques, 85% new.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Lamberto Frescobaldi, distinguished for his passion for wine and talent as a winemaker, today has the responsibility of shaping the future of the wine project originally undertaken by the founders of the Luce della Vite estate. His primary mission is the upgrading of the estate’s vineyards and the improvement of the winemaking facilities, plus research projects focusing on numerous experimental vineyards. No one was better equipped than he to bring new energy to the project that was launched in 1995, fruit of the dreams and determination of two leading figures in 20th century winemaking, Lamberto’s father Vittorio Frescobaldi and Robert Mondavi. Today the wine estate is part of the Tenute di Toscana holding company, which in turn is controlled by Marchesi de' Frescobaldi.

    JAMES SUCKLING

A ripe but suggestive nose of dark cherries, dark chocolate, hot stones, cassis, brambleberry pie and bark. Yet, on the palate, this paints an altogether different picture, in which sleek tannins carry fresh layers of forest fruit long, through a compact, full-bodied palate. Powerful acidity steers it through to a restrained but chewy finish.

Well-marked by spicy, toasty oak, this plum- and black cherry–flavored red is broad and muscular. Smooth, with fine structural support and hints of chocolate and coffee on the lingering aftertaste. Sangiovese and Merlot. Best from 2021 through 2040.
