  • The Man O’ War story begins with a special piece of land rich in history. Located at the eastern end of Waiheke Island, Man O’ War is a stunning array of coastal hillsides with high cliffs and pristine beaches forming a ruggedly beautiful coastline.

It was along this coastline that Captain James Cook came to anchor during his first voyage around the islands of New Zealand in 1769. Upon sighting the ancient stands of magnificent Kauri trees ashore, Cook noted in his journals that they would make ideal masts for the Man O’ War warships of the Royal Navy. Thus the name Man O’ War was bestowed upon this unique land.

Named in tribute to Napoleon’s final place of exile where he was banished after his defeat at Waterloo. Exiled is awarded to Man O' War's most prized Pinot Gris, made exclusively from the St Helena clone grown on their vineyards.

Vintage 2016 began with a dry, settled Spring resulting in great flowering and a corresponding excellent fruit set. The settled weather continued up to the New Year when wet weather patterns became prevalent which continued into the harvest months. Careful attention to detail in the vineyard paid off with astonishing fruit quality across all varieties in what was undoubtedly a very challenging harvest.

All fruit is hand-picked then crushed and pressed before settling in tank for 48 hours before being racked with light solids into tank for fermentation. A mixture of un-inoculated and cultured yeast ferments are used with each vineyard fermenting slowly until the desired balance of acid, tannin and sugar is reached. The wines are then chilled to below zero to stop the fermentation before blending, the blend is held at low temperatures in the cellar until bottling to retain as much of the natural carbon dioxide as possible.

The 2016 Exiled shows an intensity of the St Helena clone with masses of ginger and citrus fruit on the nose and a palate that is richly textured yet elegantly structured. Exiled 2016 manages to balance an abundance of fruit and natural sugar with fresh vibrant acidity and a minerality towards the end which is further enhanced by natural carbon dioxide and fruit tannin giving a
satisfyingly long dry thirst quenching finish.

'A moderately sweet Pinot Gris, although the sweetness is perfectly balanced by fresh acidity. Together the sweetness and acidity create an appealing tension and dryish mouth-tingling finish. An unusual and distinctive wine, with a mix of tree fruit and citrus flavours.'
