  • THE BRIEF
  • Mount Edward's approach to winemaking is simple - wines should at their best express the place where they come from, transparently, whilst at the same time reflecting a house style of winemaking. And they do just that.

Through using only organically grown fruit, and the use of natural yeasts and minimal intervention in the winery, Mount Edward craft wines that speak of place with precision, clarity and a sense of vibrancy.

While they grow a number of different varieties, their heart is all about Pinot Noir, making wines that are just delicious - textural, subtle, moreish wines - each different from the next, each unique to their place and style.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • Vinified using open fermenters, hand plunging, natural yeasts, and 11 months in French oak – 15% new – before racking and settling in tank for a further 4 months. Fermentation was carried out using de-stemmed fruit including the addition of 25% whole bunches, plus several tanks of 100% whole-bunch fruit fermentation. No filtration or fining, deposits may form. Organically grown, made and certified.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Perfumed with lovely aromatics, there is a range of complexed fruit notes of darker berryfruit, some spice, savoury tones and dried herbs. The 2016 has a silky and lush texture fruit power yet finely balanced with fine tannins throughout and long in flavour.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Founded in 1997, the winery was originally started as a small personal project, a very traditional style of winery producing Pinot Noir and Riesling. We have morphed into completely different growers over the last 2O years, driven by a desire to be progressive and individual. Organically run, with each and every wine wanting to be a pleasure to drink.

Our heart is all about Pinot Noir, making wines that are just delicious – textural, subtle, moreish wines – each different from the next, each unique to their place and our style. We grow and make a variety of other wines to keep the head happy, everything from Pet Nat to Orange to Gamay to Chardonnay – we even have the odd Riesling for the dedicated amongst us.

"The mountainous Gibbston area is home to a few up-and-coming greats such as... Mount Edward."
    Lisa Perrotti Brown, Wine Advocate

"The Mount Edward Riesling, My god it's so good it could be JJ Prum."
    Ernst Loosen

"How good are these Pinot Noirs? Damn good... Compelling Pinot Noir is a matter of layered dimensionality where you don't discover everything about a wine in one sip. Happily wineries such as Mount Edward deliver such multi dimensional goods."
    Matt Kramer, Wine Spectator

"My six top producers in New Zealand are Ata Rangi, Felton Road, Mount Edward, Mt Difficulty, Martinborough Vineyard and Neudorf."
    Tim Atkin

"One of the more arresting sights during my time in Central Otago, was winemaker Duncan Forsyth's pastel blue suit straight out of Saturday Night Fever. Fortunately his vinous sense is better than his sartorial and Mount Edward continues to produce great Pinot Noir."
    Neal Martin, Wine Journal

A smooth, supple and polished pinot, this offers aromas and flavors of red and black cherries and plums and delivers a super smooth, silky palate. Effortlessly drinkable pinot here. Drink now.
