  • THE BRIEF
  • From one of the best Chardonnay producers in the country, this white is a stellar example of Mountadam’s handiwork. Classic Chardonnay fruit aromas of peach, nectarine and ripe figs fuse with oaky spice, grilled cashew, clove and nutmeg, all spinning around a green apple and citrus core. With great depth of flavour and length, this stylish wine has the potential to age for at least 10 years.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • Vinification - Harvest of the Estate Chardonnay blocks commenced in early March 2016. The fruit was harvested at night and gently pressed using a bag press.

Maturation - The juice was fermented in 50% new French barriques, the balance in 1 and 2 year old barrels. The wine was intermittently stirred (battonage) throughout the maturation period. The wines underwent malolactic fermentation prior to racking and being returned to the same barrels. The individual parcels were racked from barrel after on average 12 months maturation in oak and the final blend carried out.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Pale straw in colour. It displays classic Chardonnay characters of peach, nectarine and fresh figs. French oak barrel fermentation and maturation gives the wine secondary aromas of cashew nuts and mixed spices. The palate has a complex mix of peach, citrus, cashew nuts, subtle truffle and spice characters throughout. The mid palate is round and creamy but a clean citrusy acid backbone provides length and persistence to the wine. The wine is complex with no single character dominating the wine. The flavour of the wine persists long after it has left the mouth.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Mountadam was first setup in 1972 by the late David Wynn, a pioneer of the wine industry an founder of Wynns Coonawarra Estate. Wynn made the winery famous on the back of superb cool climate wines, supported by his son Adam (who the winery is named after). Adam held onto the winery until 2002 when it was sold to luxury goods business LVMH. The winery returned to family hands again in 2006 when it was purchased by South Australian farmer and accountant David Brown and his wife Jenni. In late 2015 the Browns acquired the second High Eden vineyard established by Wynn. The two vineyards are dissected by High Eden road. The Brown family are keen to continue Wynn's vision to produce wines of elegance and structure. A focus on sustainable low input viticulture will guarentee the success of the vineyards into the future. From 2015, Helen McCarthy has steered the ship as Chief Winemaker.

JAMES HALLIDAY - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

From the oldest plantings on the estate, fermented in French oak, matured for 12-14 months before a barrel selection for this wine, which is one of the best produced ex the Eden Valley as a whole. It has fluid grace and effortless power, the fruit flavours at the midpoint of the stone fruit (white peach)/citrus (grapefruit) spectrum. Lovely wine.
