DESCRIPTION
  • Murdoch Hill's vineyards are located behind the township of Oakbank in the beautiful Adelaide Hills. Producing excellent Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. There has been a lot of blood sweat and tears along the way. Now, with 20 vintages under their belts the results speak for themselves. Winemaker Michael Downer was awarded Young Gun of Wine, 2017.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

The first vineyard is from the town of Piccadilly below Mt Lofty and provides pretty aromatics with a fine delicate line of fruit whilst the second vineyard, in Uraidla, on a steep east facing slope on rather shallow hard soils, naturally yields very low to provide structure and persistence. The vines are a selection of 114/114 and MV6.

Minimal winemaking influence is practiced to ensure the characters of the vineyard thrive, with spontaneous ferments and varying levels of whole bunches in the small one tone open ferments. These traditional practices provide incredible aromatics of spice and clove whilst adding fine-layered texture to the wines. Oak maturation is kept to a minimum with older French oak used for a period of 9-10 months to best express the characters of the vineyard.

    TASTING NOTES

The resulting wine has beautiful raspberry, clove and spice aromatics with subtle red fruits supported by textural round palate with very integrated elegant sappy tannins that is supported by the depth of fruit.

'Clones 114, 115 and MV6, wild-fermented, 40% whole bunches, matured in French oak (13% new). As with all the Murdoch Hill Pinots, the colour is super-bright and clear, getting them off to a flying start. A spicy, slightly savoury bouquet introduces a focused, linear wine that has great integrity and a lengthy, brambly finish.'

'A very fine boned wine that feels very pretty and a pitch perfect, cool climate expression of pinot noir. Scents of rose petal, red cherry, kirsch. The palate a calm, gentle pool of cranberry-pomegranate juice, just kissed by savouriness in a lick of game meat and whatever forest floor means to you. Finishes softly with a lick of sour cherry, spice and walnut-like savouriness. Fine wine this.'
