2016 Neudorf Moutere Pinot Gris

2016 Neudorf Moutere Pinot Gris

Quite pure in terms of the varietal pear, apple and peachy fruits. A nicely weighted palate with handy grip that carries good length. Fresh finish. 91 Points.

  • Tim and Judy Finn founded Neudorf back in the early 1980s, on the back of a dream, a healthy dose of optimism, and a whole barrel-full of hard work. Nearly 40 years later, the winery operation has grown and expanded to become one of New Zealand's finest producers. They consistently achieve outstanding results each vintage, under the watchful eye of head winemaker Todd Stevens.

The Moutere Pinot Gris is Neudorf's under-rated, quiet achiever. Sure, their Pinot Noir is a standout, but it receives adequate (and deserved) fanfare each year at release. The Gris is one of those wines that is a surprising delight, with its fresh, fruit-driven acidity, beautifully balanced by partial barrel fermentation and lees stirring, adding palate weight and complexity. Great stuff.

100% whole bunch press on a gentle cycle. Cool settled for 48 hours prior to fermentation. Wild yeast ferment in stainless steel (80%) and neutral oak puncheons (20%). No malolactic fermentation.

An enigmatic wine with notes of honeysuckle, guava paste, fresh nectarine and lily of the valley. Complex and integrated, the wine has great persistence and direction. This Pinot Gris holds the line perfectly – powerful but not showy, fine but not austere.

'Aromatic Pinot Gris with tree fruit, pear, peach and nectarine plus an appealing nutty and brioche character from lees contact. Dry, full-flavoured wine with a peppery texture and attractive spicy finish. The wine has a good balance of subtle sweetness with gentle acidity and fine tannins.'
94 Points - Bob Campbell, The Real Review

'Fragrant, into white flower aromatics, almond, apple and lychee. Well balanced, articulate, fragrance and gentle texture, flows along very nicely and closes with a subtle pear skin crunch. Nice.'
93 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

Lovely pear aromatics, with fruit ripeness on the mid-palate, plus soft honeyed fruits and a creamy phenolic element on the finish. A beautiful example.
