  • THE BRIEF
  • Situated in Australia's Yarra Valley, Oakridge has been producing quality wine since 1978. Simply named from their address at Coldstream, the 864 range is a showcase of highly detailed micro-selections from the most exceptional single vineyard sites in the Yarra Valley.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • Hazeldene Vineyard Block 1. North facing at 180 metres above sea level. Planted in the red volcanic soils of Gladysdale in 1998 using the MV6 clone and cropped at 6.3 t/Ha. All grapes hand harvested and sorted prior to destemming 100% of the berries into an open fermenter. Fermentation proceeded naturally and lasted 19 days prior to pressing to a mixture of French oak barrels, of which 15% were new. Wine remained on its gross lees for 10 months prior to blending and bottling after a single filtration.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Oakridge was first setup in 1978 as what was originally a family company. By the turn of the century the label was gobbled up by a large Australian wine company (where it flailed) until being taken back into family hands with the talented David Bicknell on winemaking duties in 2002. Since then Oakridge - and David Bicknell - has garnered a reputation as one of our finest Chardonnay makers, with a particularly handy Pinot and Shiraz or two also in the Oakridge portfolio Oakridge is all about the Yarra Valley, and particularly the Upper Yarra where it sources much of it's fruit from. The range starts with the Over the Shoulder wines which are designed as food friendly entry-level drops that would likely find a home on wine lists around the nation. The next step up is the Estate wines, and Local Vineyard Series, which serve to highlight several different vineyards around the Yarra. Finally, the top tier is the 864 wines, including a single vineyard Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, with the Chardonnay in particular regarded as one of Australia's finer modern whites.

HUON HOOKE - THE REAL REVIEW

Full red colour with tinges of purple and a sweet dark cherry aroma, clean, pure-fruited and discreet. The palate is very intense as well as dry, savoury and firm, with abundant tannins. Excellent balance. It has depth and richness and I'd expect it to age well and reward some cellaring.'

JAMES HALLIDAY - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

Hand-picked and sorted, destemmed, wild yeast open-fermented for 19 days, matured for 10 months in French oak (15% new). The spicy, savoury bouquet and palate result from perfectly balanced fruit, oak and tannin support. There is no chest beating here, simply encouraging the Upper Yarra GPS to express itself."

CAMPBELL MATTINSON - THE WINE FRONT

It has flesh and it's beautifully formed and not a hair is out of place. This is not an awkward wine in any way. Macerated cherries, spices, a light spray of garden herbs, a satiny aspect to the texture. It's a smooth talker but not in a compromised way; it goes about its business in a polished manner. It doesn't leap out at you but it doesn't need to; its quality is a self-evident truth.'
