  • THE BRIEF
  • The Local Vineyard Series allows Oakridge to celebrate the various sub-regions of the Yarra Valley. They endeavour to match particular varieties with specific sites to deliver outstanding examples of single-vineyard wines. This wine was sourced from the north-facing Oakridge vineyard sited in the grey alluvial loams of Coldstream.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • Handpicked, chilled overnight, sorted and gently destemmed to try and achieve 100% whole berry inclusion for the Close Planted portion, the Estate Block fermented with 35% whole bunches. A traditional winemaking approach was used to produce this wine – fermentation in open vessels followed by a 13 month maturation in French oak puncheons (10% new).

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Vibrant purple with red hues. Aromas lead with spicy black fruit, black cherry and ripe plums before moving to florals, stems, pastry and red currants. The palate is juicy and fresh, laced with blackberry, redcurrants and dark plums, cinnamon spice and musky florals. The slight whole bunch contribution adds fine, savoury tannin which adds structure, length and persistence.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Oakridge was first setup in 1978 as what was originally a family company. By the turn of the century the label was gobbled up by a large Australian wine company (where it flailed) until being taken back into family hands with the talented David Bicknell on winemaking duties in 2002. Since then Oakridge - and David Bicknell - has garnered a reputation as one of our finest Chardonnay makers, with a particularly handy Pinot and Shiraz or two also in the Oakridge portfolio Oakridge is all about the Yarra Valley, and particularly the Upper Yarra where it sources much of it's fruit from. The range starts with the Over the Shoulder wines which are designed as food friendly entry-level drops that would likely find a home on wine lists around the nation. The next step up is the Estate wines, and Local Vineyard Series, which serve to highlight several different vineyards around the Yarra. Finally, the top tier is the 864 wines, including a single vineyard Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, with the Chardonnay in particular regarded as one of Australia's finer modern whites.

Very attractive spices and peppers here. Some graphite, too. The blackberries and red plums intertwine the nose and palate seamlessly. Medium body with a soft and fluid texture. It holds the finish elegantly with powder and fine grip.'

From the estate block planted '96 and the close-planted block planted '10, chilled overnight, the close-planted block destemmed, the estate block fermented with 35% whole bunches, matured in French puncheons (10% new) for 13 months before blending. A wine of unbridled richness and power showing how much flavour can be extracted for those seeking wines for long-term cellaring. While full-bodied, the wine has balance and ticks the boxes.'

CAMPBELL MATTINSON - THE WINE FRONT

No shortage of flavour here. This sits squarely at the richer end of the Yarra Valley shiraz spectrum. Its flavours are a mix of red and black berries, roasted nuts, fragrant herbs and cedarwood oak, in the main, though whispers of twigs and woodsmoke help to boost the savoury side. Texture and length are also on the wine's side. It just needs a few years to really come into its own.'
