  • Rockburn takes its name from the rugged, rock-strewn, burn-scarred landscape of Central Otago. The region is renowned for its stunning scenery of rugged mountains and picturesque lakes.

    They produce premium wines of intense varietal characteristics in Central Otago, the world’s most southerly grape-growing region. Central Otago, at 45º south, has a climate similar to Burgundy, France, the great Pinot Noir producing region of the world.

    This Rockburn Pinot has always been deemed a classic, and the 2016 vintage holds court with some of the esteemed vintages released previously. 95 Points from Bob Campbell, and a dark, brooding core of Pinot flavours drill home the sensational value and buying that this wine represents.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

    Winemaker: Malcolm Rees-Francis
    Fermentation: 7 tonne fermenters, 5 to 7 days cold maceration; fermentation over 1 week with daily plunging followed by post fermentation maceration for 7 to 14 days. Some batches made good use of whole bunch inclusion.
    Barrel élevage: 10 months in French oak; 35% new, 18% 1 year old, 47% 2
    years old.
    Alcohol: 14.0%
    Titratable Acidity: 4.7 g/l
    Residual Sugar: < 1.0 g/l
    pH level: 3.68
    Vintage Comment: Excellent ripeness despite somewhat cooler conditions thanks to low yields.

    TASTING NOTES

    The 2016 vintage yielded beautiful fruit from each of our sites, which we have simply guided gently through to the bottle with minimal handling. Our “hands-off” approach delivers a pure expression of Central Otago to your glass; an expressive nose and deeply fruited palate displaying vibrant notes of red and black cherry, rich mocha and supple, silky tannins leading into a very long finish. As always this wine shows classic Rockburn elegance, integrity and balance.

    'Dark, deep, ruby-red colour with slight purple hues, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is elegant in proportion with intense and penetrating aromas of dark-red cherry and raspberry fruit, along with plum notes, dark-red florals and hints of liquorice. Dark herbal elements are harmoniously interwoven adding interest. This has focus and clarity. Medium-full bodied, the palate has richly sweet and vibrant fruit flavours of cherry and raspberry fruit, entwined with plum, liquorice and dark herb notes, along with fragrant red florals. The fruit forms a deep core with soft, supple tannin structure and integrated acidity in support. The juicy and up-front flavours carry with good drive to a long and sustained finish.

    This is a well-proportioned and concentrated, sweetly rich Pinot Noir with cherry, raspberry, plum and liquorice notes on a finely structured palate. Match with lamb, beef and venison dishes over the next 6-7+ years. Clones 10/5, 5, 6, Abel, 667 and 777, 86% of the fruit from Parkburn, 14% from Gibbston, fermented with on average 12% whole bunches to 14.0% alc., the wine on skins 7-14 days post ferment and aged 10 months in 35% new French oak. 7,000 dozen and 300 magnums made.'

The palate delivers excellent fruit weight and intensity, wonderfully supported by silky texture and polished tannins. The wine is generous and flavoursome, while remaining elegant and structured. '
