  • Great Southern Riesling, from one of the regions leading estates. The Rockcliffe Third Reef range of wines pay tribute to a local legendary surf-break, and are a blend of estate fruit. The Riesling has always been one of the shining stars, and is regularly receiving scores from the likes of Ray Jordan and James Halliday in the 90's and above. A cracking release, this 2016 vintage has the advancing bottle age to help soften the searing acidity. A treat of a wine.


    Riesling fruit is very fragile and its potential to extract phenolics makes it a challenge to handle. A key aim of the winemaking process is to preserve the very delicate flavours and aromas of this variety. The fruit was harvested in cooler night time temperatures and the free run juice kept. The juice was then cold settled, racked and left to ferment with a neutral yeast. Winemaking is kept minimal, with gentle handling throughout creating a vibrant fresh wine.

    2016 was a mild summer after a hot spring allowing early budburst and then veraison for all varieties. Rain in January slowed everything down and the cold nights gave good flavour intensity. Riesling and Chardonnay were the stand out varietals with great length of flavour.
    Pinot Noir struggled with the cool rain events and ripening flavour development. Shiraz from the warmer Frankland region are showing promising character development.

    Vibrant aromas of orange blossom and lemon zest and floral tones.

    Vibrant flavours of citrus and rose petal on the palate leading to a crisp lemon finish. The mouth feel is balanced between natural acidity and the fruit weight.


    'Hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed, cool-fermented with neutral yeast. The wine has more fruit richness and intensity than its Single Site sibling, but a little less purity and focus. Pluses and minuses, snakes and ladders.'
