  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Stephen Pannell is one of the most liked and respected winemakers in the business, loved also by a wine-drinking public looking for refreshing, aromatic white wines and reds that are approachable and moreish - in essence, wines that are serious while remaining irresistible to drink. S.C. Pannell has been part of the CellarHand family since the label's inception in the early 2000s, since when Steve has won just about every accolade going, including a second Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy and the title of Gourmet Traveller Winemaker of the Year. Steve has also bought a vineyard he’s loved for years, and acquired a winery and cellar door in the heart of McLaren Vale, from where S.C. Pannell continues its quest for great “wines that are grown, not made” – wines that are delicious, that taste of where they're from and that are a natural partner for the food and lifestyle of their home.

JAMES HALLIDAY - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

Hand-picked, 21 days fermentation/maceration, matured for 16 months in used puncheons. The grapes must have been ultra-expensive - all other costs are minimal. It's a light, bell-clear crimson, the flavours of red cherry and sour cherry, the tannins silky - a masterpiece.

GARY WALSH - THE WINE FRONT

One of the great, and more progressive thinkers in Australian wine is Steve. If only there were more like him. Bright young thing. Raspberry cordial, blackcurrant, cut fennel, spice and earth, a rose petal perfume emerging. Medium bodied, good volume of flavour, though light in footprint, with a translucent quality, fine cocoa/graphite tannin, cool acidity, and a well-defined finish of excellent length. It has verity and interest. It will age surely, and well. You can enjoy it now, but its best years are ahead of it. Really like this wine.
