  • WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

This exceptional Shiraz illustrates why the Shaw + Smith wines are multi-award winners. A medium-bodied red, it demonstrates the beauty in balance over power. Fresh red berries including raspberry and blueberry are flavoured with notes of clove and black pepper. The palate is long and layered with elegantly fine grained tannins. Pair it with a wagyu burger with bacon, gruyere cheese and pickle.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Shaw + Smith own two vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, at Balhannah and Lenswood, totalling 55 hectares. The vineyards are planted to varieties that perform particularly well in the region, namely Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Shaw + Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw. They make wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills, from varieties that suit the cooler climate: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Shaw + Smith own two vineyards, in Lenswood and Balhannah. Balhannah is also home to the winery where the Tasting Room is open daily. Shaw + Smith’s first vintage was in 1990, and the early vintages were made at Wirra Wirra and Petaluma. In 1999 they purchased a property at Balhannah, where they planted vines, and built the winery and tasting room in time for the 2000 vintage. In 2012 they purchased an established 20 hectare vineyard in Lenswood. As the business has grown Michael and Martin have built a formidable team to continue the evolution of Shaw + Smith, including Master of Wine David LeMire, Senior Winemaker Adam Wadewitz, Business Manager Grant Lovelock and Group Viticulturist Murray Leake.

CAMPBELL MATTINSON - THE WINE FRONT

Shaw + Smith Shiraz hits the jackpot. Cracking shiraz. Pure, ripe, spicy, bold, long, savoury: the lot. Exquisitely well set with tannin. Blue, black and red berries. Crushed dry leaves, not to mention spices. Cloves. Cured meats. Fruit and then more. It’s a beauty. It finishes like a kite in a stiff steady breeze; it just wants to go and go and go.

TONI PATERSON MW - THE REAL REVIEW

A complex wine laden with warm red fruits, a hint of rhubarb and subtle spice. The palate is juicy and bright with meaty accents and a savoury frame.

HUON HOOKE - THE REAL REVIEW

Deepish red colour with a tinge of purple. The bouquet is slightly vegetal and humus-like, with spice and 'forest floor' touches. The palate is intense and deep, concentrated and dense, without special elegance but an appealing fruit-sweet middle. There are some whole-bunch hints. A big, brawling baby with lashings of tannins and abundant grip. It needs more time. It lacks this wine's customary spicy aromatic lift and grace, but certainly packs a punch.

HUON HOOKE - THE REAL REVIEW

Deep, bold, bright colour, with a reserved bouquet of dark plum, black fruits, earth and graphite. The palate is full-bodied and dense, with substantial tannins that grip the finish and aftertaste. A trace of bitterness in the tannins. A highly-structured shiraz with lots of stuffing.

    RICHARD HEMMING MW - JANCISROBINSON.COM

Meaty, spicy with a touch of South Australian jam. Feels a little unkempt on the palate with a touch of bitterness and smoke to finish. Score: 16.5/20
