Wicked little Barbera from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay specialists TarraWarra. This is their second release after grafting over some Pinot Noir vines in 2013. They chose this variety for its inherent structure and intense flavour. It is ideally suited to the Yarra Valley, producing wines with intensity and finesse. The variety is thriving in its location, yielding a wine that is full flavoured, rich and long.
Sourced from a long north-west facing block with clay loam soils. The block has long produced grapes with subtle flavours and firm structure which is well suited to this clone of Barbera and the preferred style for TarraWarra Estate. 2016 was an excellent vintage in the Yarra Valley. A warmer season produced ripe fruit flavours with good balance. Temperatures hovered in the mid to high twenties from veraison to harvest. Cool nights and mild days gave perfect ripening conditions, with the fruit in perfect condition at harvest. Fermented in open format vessels. Matured over 18 months in French Oak puncheons and barriques.

'Deepish red colour with a good purple tint. Attractive pot-pourri, red fruit and Asian spice aromas; the wine is soft and spicy with some raspberry varietal touches and light, fine tannins scattered over the end-palate and finish. A charming middle-palate fruit sweetness will win it lots of friends. A very attractive and authentic barbera, and a gorgeous drink.'
95 Points - Huon Hooke
'This northwestern Italian staple variety has settled well into a new block in the Yarra, along with its Piedmont companion grape nebbiolo. This iteration is comforting in its rich ad ripe blackberry and plum flavour profile, packed in with generous flesh and warmth. The variety has alively acidity, yet this is integrating now with the fruit richness, and it's gentle in the tannin feels as well.'
