  • THE BRIEF
  • The Tarrawarra Estate Range is grown and made with the same approach as the Reserve wines - all handpicked and made with a focus on varietal expression. The wines are 100% Estate grown and sourced from vines over fifteen or more years in age.

The 2016 Barbera aims for purity of fruit, with an emphasis on harmony and balance.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • A long north-west facing block with clay loam soils. The block has long produced grapes with subtle flavours and firm structure which is well suited to this clone of Barbera and the preferred style for TarraWarra Estate.

2016 was an excellent vintage in the Yarra Valley. A warmer season produced ripe fruit flavours with good balance. Temperatures hovered in the mid to high twenties from veraison to harvest. Cool nights and mild days gave perfect ripening conditions, with the fruit in perfect condition at harvest.

This is our second release of Barbera from TarraWarra. We chose this variety for its inherent structure and intense flavour. It is ideally suited to the Yarra Valley, producing wines with intensity and finesse. The variety is thriving in its location, yielding a wine that is full flavoured, rich and long.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Red and black berries, with an earthy, savoury note underneath, supported by spice and dried petal characters. The palate is wonderfully balanced between the red-berry fruits and natural acidity. A charming example of Barbera.

    HUON HOOKE

Deepish red colour with a good purple tint. Attractive pot-pourri, red fruit and Asian spice aromas; the wine is soft and spicy with some raspberry varietal touches and light, fine tannins scattered over the end-palate and finish. A charming middle-palate fruit sweetness will win it lots of friends. A very attractive and authentic barbera, and a gorgeous drink.'

    TONY LOVE

This northwestern Italian staple variety has settled well into a new block in the Yarra, along with its Piedmont companion grape nebbiolo. This iteration is comforting in its rich ad ripe blackberry and plum flavour profile, packed in with generous flesh and warmth. The variety has alively acidity, yet this is integrating now with the fruit richness, and it's gentle in the tannin feels as well.'
