  • THE BRIEF
  • Long-term mates and now business partners, Telmo Rodriguez and Pablo Eguzkiza have been kicking wine goals together for nearly 30 years. They started working together in the late 1980s at Telmo’s family Rioja estate, Remelluri, and went on to become leaders in changing conceptions of Spanish wine during the post-Franco era (one of significant recovery and re-imagining). As well as Remelluri, they have three separate Rioja projects. By way of a handle, they use Telmo’s name for their wines, but are equals in every respect – beginning with intellect and passion.
Tabuérniga is another extraordinary place in the historic town of Labastida, where viticulture has been maintained for more than 1,300 years. It is an impressive landscape, a closed valley crossed by treads of vineyards, some of them abandoned, others cultivated, and many others recovered by Telmo and Pablo. Tabuérniga is a small vertical valley, where its own isolation has meant that shorter vegetative cycle varieties offer a different expression, giving rise to a sober and austere wine, but full of depth and elegance.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • Tabuérniga is another extraordinary place in the historic town of Tabuérniga is planted to Tempranillo, some Graciano, Mazuelo and Garnacha, and lots of Garnacha Blanca (there is one sizeable plot of Garnacha Blanca planted solo, but most of the place is field blend). There are nine or more cultivars in total (the genetics have not been entirely identified – Telmo and Pablo like the mystery!), with traces of Viura, Moscatel, Maturana, Blanca Roja and Gran Negro too.

The soils are shallow, stony, silty chalk-clay of very low fertility. Altitude is 540-630 m, with 2.7 hectares of the little valley planted. The wines are naturally fermented in 3-4,000 liter open wooden casks, and aged 14 months in 1500 liter foudre. 2,000 bottles were made in 2014, the first release of Tabuerniga.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Telmo Rodriguez is one of Spain’s pioneer winemakers, advocating native grape varietals tied to the climates and conditions of their sites, and making world-class wines from undiscovered as well as known regions. Perhaps most impressive, while Telmo Rodriguez makes rare and limited wines of astonishing character and quality, his everyday wines have been equally praised, and widely recognized for the tremendous value they offer. Telmo studied viticulture and oenology at the University of Bordeaux and was the winemaker at his family winery in Rioja, Remelluri, and then set off on his own in the early 1990s to discover new vineyards and regions all around Spain. He now makes a range of wines in diverse viticultural areas of Spain, with an emphasis on the following: Telmo was among the first to make significant wines in Toro, Rueda, Valdeorras, Malaga, Alicante and Cigales. In these areas he uses native varietals, often grapes rediscovered such as Godello, Verdejo, Moscatel and Monastrell which do not have wide recognition. With other classically recognized varietals such Tempranillo, Garnacha and Carignan, he works with vines that are indigenous and reflect the character of their particular site. As a result, Telmo has been one of the leaders of the quality revolution with these varietals in up and coming areas such as Toro, as well as in the traditional areas of Rioja and Ribera del Duero.

Impressive blackberry, blueberry and violets on the nose. Hints of licorice and asphalt. Full-bodied and dense yet ever so agile and bright. Tight and linear tannins give it length and beauty. Needs time to come completely together, but impressive density and length. Endless. Drink after 2021.

    LUIS GUTIERREZ - WINE ADVOCATE

Tabuerniga is a relatively large vineyard (compared with others), but they select grapes from part of it to make a really exceptional 2016 Tabuerniga. This is a revelation from the first vintage; it has shown better each year, and this 2016 is the finest of the three years. This wine is about finesse, with great balance and the weightless palate that makes it feel light, but it has great inner strength. There is nuance, and great depth. With time in the glass, it develops further complexity and unfurls aromas of violets and blood orange peel, quite distinctive and captivating. This has to be one of the bargains of the year, because this quality rarely comes at this price. Grab it if you can! 1,997 bottles were filled in May 2018.
