'This is fine, highly refined cabernet with compelling vinosity and sap. Sue Hodder is a cabernet wunderkind with wines firmly stamped with a regional footprint.'
97 Points - Ned Goodwin MW
It's hard enough to go past any Wynns Coonawarra Cabernet, but when it's a rare-hen such as the 2016 Wynns Gables (only allowed to be sold in restaurants and bars) and it just so happens to have 97 points from the James Halliday Wine Companion, well you better stymie up the dinario and grab a case quick smart. We have a very limited number of bottles remaining of this wine, and its a belter. All drenched in the Wynns signature style, with the nuanced and light touch of champion winemaker Sue Hodder at the helm. This is just beautiful; a quintessential Cabernet from a bygone era. Grab it while you still can.
For more than 50 years the heritage-listed winery and its famous gables have been a feature of Wynns bottle labels, becoming a distinctive mark of exceptional Coonawarra quality. Crafted from small, select parcels of the region’s famed Cabernet Sauvignon grape vines, ‘The Gables’ wine is a special addition to any wine list.
2016 Vintage - A warm season with moderate yields delivering full fruit flavours and balanced acidity.
Maturation - 14 months in seasoned French oak vats, hogsheads and barriques. A proportion remained in tank to retain freshness.
Alcohol - 13.5%
Intensity and iridescent brightness demand notice, a hallmark of the selected vineyards and the maturation in vats. Dark brooding blackberry, cherry, plum and thyme, meshing with savoury fine cedar notes. Soft but succulent acid and superfine tannins make this wine flow. Think smoky charcuterie board, salty cheeses, gently grilled meats, spicy smoky prawns. Versatile and satisfying.
'Blood plum, currant and anise scents are sheathed in a smooth veneer of detailed, gravelly and yet, impeccably massaged tannins. Together with juicy acidity, these serve as a welcome signpost to the fruit while conferring authority and a welcome savouriness. The finish is long and saline, laying bay leaf and strewn herb across the gums while expanding the flavours across the palate. This is fine, highly refined cabernet with compelling vinosity and sap. Sue Hodder is a cabernet wunderkind with wines firmly stamped with a regional footprint.'
