'Both the bouquet and medium to full-bodied palate have a smoky/savoury/spicy undertow easily dealt with by the black fruits and generous tannins.'
96 Points - James Halliday & Top 100 Wines of 2017

  • Yabby Lake Vineyard was established by the Kirby family in 1998, in Tuerong, which is located in the northern end of the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. Over the past decade, the vineyard has built a reputation for chardonnay and pinot noir of great purity and character under its Single Vineyard and Single Block Release labels.

Led by winemaker Tom Carson, the Yabby Lake philosophy is to craft wines that speak of our site and the season in which they were grown. It’s the attention and care in the vineyard that is most critical to allowing this expression.

A perfumed and spicy Syrah, medium-bodied in style. The palate is concentrated and silky, with finely structured tannins, bright fruit characters, wonderful elegance and depth.

The fruit was handpicked on 7 March and gently de-stemmed into traditional oak open fermenters. A small portion of whole bunches. After 12-14 days on skins, the wine was pressed off skins into tight grain 500L French oak puncheons for malolactic fermentation and maturation. The wine remained in oak for 11 months and was racked twice during maturation.

    Region - Tuerong, Mornington Peninsula
    Alc - 13.5%

  • REVIEWS

'5% whole bunches wild-fermented in oak cuves, matured in French oak (15% new) for 11 months. The vintage was challenging for pinot, but not for shiraz. Both the bouquet and medium to full-bodied palate have a smoky/savoury/spicy undertow easily dealt with by the black fruits and generous tannins.'

'Deep, rich red colour with lots of purple, the bouquet blackberry and violets, smoky char and very Shirazzy, with traces of herbs and mint. The palate is concentrated and dense, with lots of grip. Chocolate - and even some rum-and-raisin chocolate - on the palate. A very deep, powerful, long-term wine. Most impressive.'
