  • THE BRIEF
  • A 'Best of Vintage' blend made from Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro, and a little splash of Sagrantino.

Each vintage, winemaker Rob Mack, sets aside the best barrels from each wine he makes, to create a seasonal blend. This is The Rapture. Obviously the components and blend will vary vintage to vintage, but this time around he's crafted a rich and layered GSM.

Despite its relative youth, the wine is already showing a lovely complexity amidst the heady richness. It's dark and brooding, but with enough elegance and restraint to find balance. Approachable now, this will certainly develop over time in the cellar.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • Rapture is a Best of Vintage blend. The varieties change each year depending on what Aphelion believe comprise their peak wine. In 2017, the wine is a Grenache Shiraz Mataro, and a splash of Sagrantino.

They held back several barrels that stood out as being exceptional when blending the 2017 wines. The result of these barrels when blended is the first release of the Aphelion Rapture. The wine is 25% whole bunch fermented, 25% cold soaked pre-ferment, 35% extended skin contact ferment (one month), and a small amount of Sagrantino was added to the blend to provide structure. Unfined & unfiltered.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Dark roses and earth on opening then evolve to display bright violet and black cherry. The wine dances across the palate and teases and pulls. Finishes with dusty and assertive tannins and flooding dark fruit. Impeccable balance and a luxurious feel in the mouth. Matches well to rich dishes such as cassoulet.

  • WHO MADE IT?

HUON HOOKE - THE REAL REVIEW

Deep red/purple colour with a fresh plum, cherry to raspberry aroma, backed with a little toasty oak; the palate generous and rich, with abundant soft tannins and loads of charm. The fruit-sweetness is gorgeous and the palate medium to full-bodied. Lovely wine, with a touch of opulence - and remarkable complexity for its tender age. Delicious!

An assembly of various small parcels, to represent the ‘best of vintage’, this has a deep, plum and wild-berry core with almost slate-like, wet-stone notes, too. The palate has a very supple, succulent and dark-fruited core with a long, mouth-filling finish.
