This is Aphelion's version of the classic Umbrian variety.
Often seen as a rustic, tannic wine, under the deft touch of winemaker Rob Mack, this Sagrantino is anything but. It's much rounder and more focused on the purple and blue fruits profile, with juicy natural acidity, and lovely spicy complexity. It's savoury and layered and a brilliant example of this variety.
One tonne of fruit was picked from the White’s Valley vineyard (this vineyard is low yielding, and only has three rows of Sagrantino planted to it). An additional tonne of fruit was picked from a Seaview vineyard with red iron rich rocky soil. The vines on both vineyards are approaching 20 years of age.
The fruit from each vineyard was destemmed and kept as whole berries before being fermented. Free run and light pressings were kept separate and then aged for 20 months in neutral and third-use French oak to round out the wine and soften the tannins.
Strong herbal and mescal notes match with red fruits and roasted meats. This is a light to medium bodied wine with a slightly firmer tannin structure than its siblings. The palate is dense with flavour impact yet light on its feet and finishes well balanced. Smoky charcuterie and earth herbs mingle on the finish. Outrageously spice driven with clove, cinnamon and five spice all coming to the fore on the nose. A savoury Italianiate palate supports a tight structure and a dry palate to provide a very food friendly wine. Tannins are prominent but in balance.
Straight out of the blocks, this new wine label established in 2014 by husband and wife Rob and Louise Mack has already gained a strong reputation for quality and value. Pedigreed winemaker Rob Mack concentrates on grape varieties that thrive in the Mediterranean climate of McLaren Vale, producing stylish Grenache as well as other regionally emerging varieties, such as Mataro and Sagrantino. They craft their wines to match the foods they love to eat - Italian, Mediterranean, and Asian. It starts with the sun and the earth. Aphelion Wine Co.’s growers are passionate about producing premium, hand tended grapes from only the most select, unique parcels of land. *2018 Young Gun Winemaker of the Year Award Winner*
MIKE BENNIE - THE WINE FRONT
Full throttle red that dials in dark berries, cherry cola whiffs, choc-liquorice and green olive scents with similar, thick-set but fresh-feeling characters to taste. Tannins ripple through the wine with authority and help shape the concentration of the core. There’s texture of silk-brushed-backwards and an impressive deal of flavour lingers in dark berries and salted liquorice. All up, an impressive wine of lasting impression and pitch-perfect balance.
This offers a dark-berry core with blackcurrants and sweet perfume. Plush and sleek, nicely groomed tannins and a plush, even finish with bright, purple fruit to close.
Good depth of colour with a trace of purple, the bouquet sweetly perfumed and berry-ish, with Italian bitter herb overtones. It's lush and fruit-sweet, smooth-textured and lasting. The tannins are strongly present but balanced, adding structure and texture without being grippy. There's a lot of bitter balsamic herb character throughout the wine and it's quite distinctive. This is much more appealing than most Italian sagrantino that I've tasted.
