2017 Bannockburn Chardonnay

2017 Bannockburn Chardonnay

'This is a good experience. It’s loaded with flavour, shapely and long, fresh while being powerful. It feels pent up, almost muscular, shows stone fruit, nougat, almond paste and saline acidity'

DESCRIPTION
  • '…Bannockburn produces outstanding wines across the range, all with individuality, style, great complexity and depth of flavour. The low-yielding estate vineyards play their role. Winemaker Michael Glover is determined to enhance the reputation of Bannockburn.' James Halliday

'These are seriously good wines and stylistically nothing like the Bannockburns of old.' Jane Faulkner, The Age

Since its establishment by Stuart Reginald Hooper in 1974, Bannockburn Vineyards has been at the vanguard of the Australian fine wine story, producing vineyard specific wines of the highest quality from the start. Lying 25 kilometres northwest of Geelong along the Midland Highway, this heavyweight estate is located in the Moorabool Valley sub-region, just outside the township of Bannockburn. Following almost a decade under the steam train of energy and passion that was Michael Glover, Matt Holmes is the winemaker charged with writing the next chapter of this singular estate.

This Chardonnay has consistently been rated as one of Australia’s best wines, reflecting the ideal combination of soils, climate and mature vines.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

Olive Tree Hill vines planted in 1976 and Winery Block (1981), clone likely to be P58. Hand harvested 8/3/2017 - 23/3/2017.

Whole bunch pressed, settled overnight and then wild fermented in French oak hogsheads and puncheons (20%new) 12 months on lees, partial malo-lactic fermentation, no stirring before bottling in March 2018 13.0% alc/vol.

Budburst and harvest returned to long-term average timing, framing a moderately warm season. A core of fresh citrus acids, stone fruits and subtle winemaking inputs make for a wine well suited to a range of food matches.

  • REVIEWS

'Bannockburn rounding the corner on the Michael Glover era and footprints and into a new era. Though the motif might have changed, the general sense of quality, particularly as an imprint of site, is all there.

This is a good experience. It’s loaded with flavour, shapely and long, fresh while being powerful. It feels pent up, almost muscular, shows stone fruit, nougat, almond paste and saline acidity – the palate is a sensational roll of dense, interesting and delicious flavours. Perfume is a bit shutdown, but that won’t hold you back. Wonderful release.'
