  • WHO MADE IT?
  • THE BRIEF
  • Peter Jackson's aspiration at Catalina Sounds is to continue producing excellent quality wines of beautiful fruit expression, interest, finesse and balance. Striving to create wines of great honesty and integrity that are true to their site, while attempting to incorporate complexity and longevity into the wines.

Three outstanding vineyards produce the fruit for this impressive pinot. An alluring mix of dark berry fruits, lifted florals and spice marry with underlying savoury notes. It’s elegant and silky with wild, dark berry flavours and gentle dried herb notes. This medium-bodied pinot has exceptional fruit and tannin balance which lingers in the mouth.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • As always, winemaking was very hands on for this wine. Hand picked fruit was destemmed and transferred to open top fermenters for at least a 5 day cold soak. When signs of natural fermentation were obvious, the tanks were warmed, allowing fermentation to get into full swing. The ferments were plunged a maximum of twice daily until dry, before an extended maceration on skins for up to 7 days. Once pressed, the wines were run to French oak barriques (15% new) for natural malolactic fermention and maturation for a total of 10 months. The wine was blended in late January 2018 before bottling in February 2018.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Appealing savoury wild berry fruits, dark cherry and roasted notes. The wine belies its moderate alcohol (12.8%) with a density and structure rarely seen from Marlborough, yet retaining an elegance of fruit with appealing savoury wild berry fruits, dark cherry and roasted notes supported by a silken, fine tannin framework which carries flavour to a sustained, immensely satisfying finish.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • New Zealand's Catalina water planes (known as flying boats) played a vital role across the South Pacific during and after World War II. Catalina Sounds pays homage to this plane and the beauty of the Marlborough Sounds where it served and made its home. Peter Jackson's aspiration at Catalina Sounds is to continue producing excellent quality wines of beautiful fruit expression, interest, finesse and balance. Striving to create wines of great honesty and integrity that are true to their site, while attempting to incorporate complexity and longevity into the wines.
