  • THE BRIEF
  • Forged from a partnership between Dan Buckle and Aaron Drummond, while they were both working at Mount Langi Ghiran, Circe is inspired by a shared love of Pinot, and the Mornington Peninsula.

Their Hillcrest Vineyard is dry-grown and low-yielding, with a focus maintained on quality. In the winery, minimal interventionist practice is observed, to allow the quality of the fruit to show. Additions of whole bunch, and judicious use of oak add complexity and balance, creating wonderfully elegant expressions of Pinot, with high drinkability!

  • WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

A bright, clean style of Pinot Noir with loads of vibrant red fruit flavours; cherry, raspberries and cinnamon are all on offer here. Complexity is added with around 60% whole-bunch pressed, and some well handled oak. A great drinking Circe Pinot Noir that is ready to be enjoyed now.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Circe is a partnership inspired by growing up on the Mornington Peninsula and a love of Pinot Noir. Dan Buckle and Aaron Drummond met at Mount Langi Ghiran in 2007. After a vintage of Shiraz it was inevitable that the conversation would turn to any other varietal except Shiraz. With both of us growing up on the Mornington Peninsula, we were keen and curious as to what we could do with Pinot Noir from such great soil. The name Circe derives from Homer and is a nice metaphor for the seductions – and perils – of Pinot Noir. Dan studied arts at university before realising it wouldn’t help him get a job. He then went on to oenology. At least his studies of the classics helped us develop a name. Good for something I guess?

CAMPBELL MATTINSON - THE WINE FRONT

Lovely style of wine. Elegant. The flavour comes as a sheet, the acid chimes like a bell, the spice notes add the highlights. It’s not a wine of volume but it is a wine of refreshment and interest. It’s also reductive, though it cleans up with air. It could do with a little more ripeness and flavour, arguably but it still has plenty of charm.
