  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • The winter and spring of 2016 was one of the wettest on record which delayed flowering. By early summer we had some periods of good warm weather which encouraged growth, but vintage was still looking a month behind 2016 and more in line with an old-fashioned vintage. Several rainfall events in January further delayed vintage and had the vineyard team working hard. Thankfully the warm and dry weather returned, and the harvest proceeded at a leisurely and relaxed pace allowing a long ripening time for maximum flavour development. The wines look outstanding.

The Galaxidia vineyard was planted in 1998 after purchasing a neighbouring property. The vineyard is a north facing slope and typically produces wines of fragrance and intensity. This small bottling of a 100 dozen is from the best block on this vineyard.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

The nose shows lifted red fruits and sweet exotic spice. The palate is plush and full bodied but shows restraint and freshness. Flavours of dark plum and mulberry are beautifully balanced by a savoury, earthy richness.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Coriole was founded by Hugh and Molly Lloyd in 1967, and they released their first wine in 1969. The Estate is still owned by the Lloyd family and is now managed by Mark and Paul Lloyd. Coriole is situated in the undulating hills of the densely planted McLaren Vale region just within sight of the sea and less than an hour from Adelaide. The original farmhouses were built in 1860 and are now the epicentre of the garden and cellar door at the winery. The original vineyards were planted in 1919. The Lloyd family are considered pioneers in the McLaren Vale region, and visionaries in the planting of Italian and French varieties. Long before it was fashionable, Mark Lloyd developed vineyards of Sangiovese, Picpoul, Chenin Blanc, Nero d’Avola, and others, plus of course, Shiraz. They are considered one of the leading lights of the region.

    JAMES SUCKLING

This single, Seaview sub-region plot has a dark-fruit nose with blood-plum, espresso and blackberry aromas, leading to a dense but fine array of tannins that carry a long and plush, blackberry finish. Stunning concentration and poise, really holding the finish in style. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

JAMES HALLIDAY - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

Grown on terra rossa soil, whole berries open-fermented, 10 days on skins, matured for 18 months. Medium to full-bodied, exceptionally supple dark fruits coated in dark chocolate. Essence of McLaren Vale, filling the mouth from the word go.
