  • WHO MADE IT?
  • On the advice of eminent agronomist Dr. John Gladstones, Dr. Kevin and Diana Cullen planted a trial acre of vines at Wilyabrup, Margaret River in 1966. Commencing in 1971, 18 acres of vines were planted on their sheep and cattle farm, including their first Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Semillon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc were planted between 1976 and 1978.

JAMES HALLIDAY - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

Hand-picked, wild-fermented in terracotta amphorae, then pressed to French barriques (66% new) for a further 6 months. The only addition was minimal SO2, biodynamic principles followed throughout. The light crimson colour is deceptive, as is the light to medium-bodied palate. The bouquet is ultra-fragrant, the aromas and flavours locked into red fruits, cassis and gentle but persistent tannins. Utterly delicious.

GARY WALSH - THE WINE FRONT

The wine spent 107 days in terracotta amphorae before being basket pressed direct to 3 barrels. All of the wine was aged in French oak for 6 months, of which 66% were new. The Alcohol is 13.5%. 859 bottles made. A marked contrast between this and the Full Moon, and for whatever reason, the Flower Day is the prettier wine. Very bright and pretty, violet, raspberry and mulberry, earth and spice, even a touch of liquorice. It's fine and fluid, mellifluous and suave, with a mineral feel and tightly packed tannin, perfume and spice trailing on a superb long finish. All just so. Glorious and under-stated expression of Cabernet. MB: So fragrant, flower and dark fruited, spice, exotic herbs, sweet earth. Silky, pinot-like, then tightens on nebbiolo-like tannins with a lick of herbs and spice to close. Superb. 97

HUON HOOKE - THE REAL REVIEW

Medium-depth red with purple tinges: a light colour for a young Margaret River cabernet. The wine is light to medium-bodied, with a fragrant nose of violet, berry and cedar, the palate quite intense and flavoursome, complex and subtle, with fine-grained but persuasive tannins in good harmony. Finesse-plus. A lighter style, which has a lot of charm. (859 bottles produced. Harvested in early April and fermented in a terracotta amphora, on skins for 15 weeks, and aged in 66% new oak for six months)

    JANCIS ROBINSON MW

Aged for six months in oak barrels. 70 dozen bottles made. Transparent crimson. Notably perfumed. Round and fresh. Almost rudely direct and blooming. Really different from the bigger Full Moon bottling. So lively and earthy! Great balance. Amazingly accessible for a two-year-old wine. Light and lively. Score: 18/20
