  • Strange name, but look at it backwards and it all comes in to view. Riorret is a single vineyard Pinot, only made in the best vintages and representing the pinnacle achievement of De Bortoli and winemaker Steve Webber. It's all about the expression of site, and land, and season, and is often one of the shining lights from the Yarra Valley (especially in warmer vintages, where the cooler site prevails).

Lusatia Park, the vineyard from which this wine is sourced, is one of the most coveted vineyards in the Yarra Valley. Located in the upper reaches of the Valley itself, in Woori Yallock, the Lusatia Park vineyard has always been the mainstay for supplying fruit to some of the greatest producers in the Valley. That is, until 2016, when De Bortoli finally took possession of the vineyard they had desired to be called their own for so long. Nowadays, the fruit is kept for De Bortoli exclusively. Not a bad win for a remarkable vineyard that often achieved the highest price per tonne in the entire region.

This is a structural wine, built for ageing and will unfurl its most important self in at least 5 years time.

Located at Woori Yallock in the upper reaches of the Yarra Valley. Extraordinary north facing De Bortoli family owned vineyard. Planted in 1985, close vine spacing, lots of manual work in the vines, deep red basalt soils. Typically produces fine, aromatic and charming Pinot Noir.

2016 was warm and dry through most of the growing season. Good rain in late January settled things down and the harvest was mild but quite early.

Hand picked and sorted to ensure perfect fruit reaches the fermenter. Lots of whole berry fermentation, some whole bunches. Pressed after 18 days on skins. Matured on fine lees in new and used casks for 10 months. Gravity at all stages. Bottled in February 2017.

    Alc/Vol: 13.5%, pH: 3.67, TA: 5.2 g/L

Medium red with lovely brightness. Red fruits, Pinot aromatics, wood spice, ethereal. Tight, great structure and energy, fine tannins, textural, delicious.

'Lusatia Park pinot noir from an excellent vintage. Not that we want to get ahead of ourselves.
It’s a sinewy beast. It has flesh and fruit sweetness but peppery, twiggy characters abound. I don’t have the winemaking specs but you’d imagine that there’s a fair amount of whole bunch influence here. There are jellied characters too, and a swoosh of svelte, creamy, cedarwood oak. It’s still coming up, still finding its feet and growing into itself. But I have no hesitation in calling the quality on offer here ‘high’.

'Mid-red/purple colour. Spicy, smoky bouquet, very pinoty and shows a touch of toasty oak, well integrated. The wine is light-bodied and finely-textured, with good intensity and balance, and a lovely lightness of touch. Very good drinkability.'
