The historic Steven vineyard was planted in 1968. Ever since the red volcanic soils have produced some of the Hunter Valley’s most outstanding wines. This 2017 vintage is a classic Hunter Valley shiraz, with great fruit, spice and elegance. A medium bodied shiraz that will drink well as a young wine but will reward those patient enough to stash it away for another 10 years.

Intense spice and pepper on the nose combine with rich berry aromas. Rich fruit flavours of black cherries combine with firm tannins to provide a medium-bodied style with great length on the palate. A well-balanced wine, consistent with the classic Hunter Valley style of Shiraz.
The De Iuliis vineyard is located on Lovedale Road in the Lower Hunter Valley. It is framed by the magnificent Brokenback mountain range. The property was purchased in 1987 and after several years of soil preparation the first vines were planted in 1990. The De Iluliis family vision is to produce wines of excellent quality that proudly bear their name. They make classic Hunter Valley Semillon, Shiraz and Chardonnay styles, as well as Merlot and Verdelho. A total of 15 hectares of vineyard produces a low yielding annual crush of 100 tonnes, resulting in concentrated fruit. Winemaker Michael De Iuliis aims to maintain a family tradition of outstanding quality.
JAMES HALLIDAY - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION
The Steven Vineyard was planted in '68 on red volcanic soil, and in '11 De Iuliis purchased 12ha of this great vineyard. Its quality is captured in the earthy/spicy regional aromas and its wonderfully juicy, intense and long palate. Balance is there, in spades.
Medium to full red colour with a purple tint. The aroma is spicy, fresh and complex, deep and inviting, echoing the palate, which is intense and bright and has excellent depth of fruit flavour and is already remarkably complex. Elegant style. A delicious wine already.
There’s a fresh red-berry and raspberry core here with some quite attractively chewy tannins on the blackberry and mulberry-flavored palate. Drink or hold.
MIKE BENNIE - THE WINE FRONT
Lovely expression here, set to darker fruits, clove-like oak character, some sour-sweetness to acidity, a touch of green herbs. Sits at medium weight, shows a touch of tartness, tannins are feathery and chewy, the wine draws long and fine to close. It’s a nice, Hunter Shiraz 101 here.
STEVE LESZCZYNSKI - QWINE
A beautiful wine to whisk you away. Gorgeous red berry and dried red flower aromas greet you here. Sweet baking spices waft around carefree tempting to lure you closer. Super slurp factor from the delicious medium body profile, the depth of the mid-palate shies away fractionally from ensuring this is a wine that makes an absolute stamp of authority. Good fruit persistence leads to a moreish finish. Earthy and spicy to close. A lovely Shiraz.
