  • You might think that following up the outstanding 2016 vintage of this wine would be near impossible - like the notoriously difficult 'third album' for a rock group. But Julian Langworthy and the team at Deep Woods have done it again.

The 2017 Reserve Chardonnay is the sixth vintage of what the Deep Woods winemaking team see as the ‘rebirth’ of this wine, and has become one of the most sought after wines from Deep Woods Estate. Showing near-perfect balance between fruit and oak, the Deep Woods Reserve Chardonnay needs to be in your cellar!

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

The 2017 growing season was by most measures, an excellent vintage. A long, cool season yielded wines with intense and pure natural acidity. The vintage was, however, punctuated by an unseasonably wet and cold February. Careful canopy management by the viticultural team was needed to ensure that outstanding fruit quality was retained.

This wine is an assemblage of two central Wilyabrup vineyards with a small amount of fruit from the Karridale area. The fruit was hand-picked and then chilled to maintain pristine condition. A minimalist approach in the winery included whole-bunch pressing, wild fermentation and sparing lees stirring in a mixture of new and seasoned French oak. The individual parcels were kept separate and aged on lees for 9 months until the final wine was blended for bottling.

    TASTING NOTES

Notes of fresh stone fruit and citrus blossom combine with warm straw, cedar spice and chipped oyster shell aromas. This wine displays a pure and elegant palate of white stone fruit, lime zest and blossom. A fine acid backbone combines with juicy phenolic structure to produce a wine of depth, power, and complexity.

98 Points - Decanter Tasting Panel February 2019

'Sweet rock melon aromas. Nice focus, with the palate holding back before catapulting the fruit long and hard. Grapefruit oil and roast lime notes. Terrific clarity and zestiness, with verve and coolness. Very Margaret River! Not trying to be Burgundy. Terrific purity and charge with restraint.'
98 Points - Sarah Ahmed MW

    '
I love the purity, then the layers of pristine fruit, a touch of the far-east, but then Provençal stone fruit, nutty compressed pineapple on the mid palate. It is persistent with a lovely gentle nutty background.'

    '
Stylish oaked aromas with a subtle vein of nutty complexity behind bright, fresh, apple fruit. A delightfully intense and fruity palate with deceptive weight and length. Needs time to unfurl, but this really has a lot going for it. A fabulous wine with great potential.'
    98 Points - Anthony Rose

'Stylish wine with all the buttons done up, laces tied, tie knotted perfectly – that kind of wine. Light struck match, lime, white peach, nougat and spice. Light to medium-bodied, flinty and fine, gentle flavour, no great depth or concentration, but what’s there glides through the mouth most charmingly. Finish is good, a little citrus rind, but not quite emphatic in terms of length. It’s a little ‘finesse over flavour’, but a lovely wine all the same.'
