  • Since launching their domaine in 1983, Catherine and Didier Champalou have achieved admirable quality and consistency in their wines. What’s more impressive is their total mastery of Vouvray: be it still, sparkling, dry, off-dry, or decadently sweet, the Champalous are experts at growing and vinifying Chenin Blanc from this storied part of the Loire Valley. The philosophy of Didier and Catherine (and now daughter Celine) is simple: to create wines that respect the grape variety, the terroir and the nature of the vintage.

It is a curious quirk of Vouvray that although labelled 'sec,' the wines are not always completely dry. 'Sec Tendre,' as this wine is, has a touch of residual sugar, which serves to heighten the natural fruit characters, and acts as a wonderful foil to the minerality so prevalent in the Loire. A stunning and elegant Chenin.

Clay and limestone. 100% Chenin Blanc.

The harvest is carried out at the cold temperature of the morning, and the grapes are directly pressed on arrival at the winery. Fermentation is carried out in stainless-steel tanks in our cellar. The wine is matured at cold temperature on its lees for eleven months before bottling.

Didier Champalou makes beautiful, ethereal Vouvray. A delicate straw yellow in colour. Aromas of green apples and quince, with a touch of marzipan. The palate has a rounded, tender, almost buttery texture with suggestions of apples and ripe quinces sheathed in delicate threads of honey, with an elegant and crisp finish.
