'What this Vouvray possesses is layers of flavour, showcasing beeswax lemon, lemon rind and white peach with a soft, gentle finish that at first seems too juicy but then you get that Chenin Blanc tang'

  • Bernard Fouquet, a quiet-spoken man, is making some of the most serious Vouvray you'll find these days. He is regarded in France and the international press as one of the top Vouvray producers. No one succeeds better than Bernard in capturing the mineral tones unique to Vouvray’s soil, with the marvelous balance of explosive fruit and titillating sensation of the Chenin Blanc grape.

The Cuvee de Silex, is a completely organic Vouvray sourced from 50-60 year old vines. This 2017 is a beguiling and utterly breathtaking Vouvray. While it has a breath of residual sugar, the acids and chalk driven minerality provide such a complete counterpoint to the fruit, the wine dancing on the tongue. Vouvray is one of the greatest white wine making regions in the world, and the Bernard Fouquet Domaine des Aubuisières leads the way.

'Bernard Fouquet—formerly recorded under the name Domaine des Aubuisières—is a top producer in Vouvray and offers some of the most fascinating modern Chenin Blancs that I have tasted. The wines combine purity and finesse with a round and fruity juiciness, which give them a rather round and charming, but also refined character. Sourced from 30 hectares of vines on two main different soil types (clay and limestone; silty clay soils), these dry or medium-dry wines are fermented with natural yeasts in both stainless steel and temperature-controlled oak vats.'

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

A sec (dry) Vouvray from 2 flint soil parcels. Entirely hand-harvested and only indigenous yeasts used. Fermented and matured in stainless steel thermo-regulated vats.

    Tasting Notes

"Has a bright and pure, fresh and elegant bouquet of white fruits and some flinty notes. Pure and piquant on the palate, with a lovely juiciness and a piquant acidity, this is a very mineral and elegant Chenin from silex soils. The sweetness is perfectly intertwined with the piquant minerality and the serious body."

  • REVIEWS

'This Vouvray from Bernard Fouquet – tasted as part of a Loire masterclass a week or so back – shows exactly why, with that magical balance between residual sugar and acidity. That means circa 10g/L RS is balanced out by acidity not far behind, making for an unquestioned tension and freshness that is just delicious. More than just freshness though, what this Vouvray possesses is layers of flavour, showcasing beeswax lemon, lemon rind and white peach with a soft, gentle finish that at first seems too juicy but then you get that Chenin Blanc tang (with some phenolic grip for good measure). Ultimately, this is a well-priced wine that I would personally pay dollars for regularly (and there aren’t many of those).'
