2017 Dr Thanisch Berncasteler Doctor Kabinett

2017 Dr Thanisch Berncasteler Doctor Kabinett

'Light, bright yellow colour, with a lifted mineral fragrance evoking slate, crushed river-stones and honey, the honey becoming very apparent in the mouth. The balance is superb and the acidity seamless. A top wine.'

DESCRIPTION
  • The Thanisch family has cultivated wine continuously since the year 1636 and can look back on a history covering more than 375 years. The estate has been run as a family business for 11th generation, of which the last four generations were women. The boutique estate is 7 ha (16 acres) in size, including the most famous vineyard in Germany, the Berncasteler Doctor and the top vineyards Bernkasteler Badstube, Bernkasteler Lay and Bernkasteler Graben. All of the vineyards are planted with 100% Riesling vines, most of which are mature and on original rootstocks.

Quality is still the standard of the Thanisch family estate. A great part of this quality is due to the Doctor Cellar that is hewn deep into the rocks beneath the vineyard. Here all Thanisch wines are matured in traditional old oak Fuder casks at a constant year-round temperature of 8° C (45° F). In the mid 1990’s, the family has invested heavily into modern technology, gentle handling of uncrushed grapes and temperature controlled fermentation equipment.

The Riesling wines from Bercasteler Doctor are amoung the famous and noble white wines in the world. These superb wines are highly prized by connoisseurs for their magnificence and complexity, making them some of the most sought-after wines of the entire Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region. The name Thanisch is inseparably linked to the “Doctor”.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

'A year of beautiful ripeness, with precise acidity and lively energy. A small harvest, but one of excellent quality, reflecting the richness of the vintage. The wines offer ripe and opulent fruit and presence as well as weight on the palate. With their pronounced acidity, they taste drier than one could expect from the analytics.”'

The size of the Estate is a modest 9 hectares, the Thanisch vineyard parcels lying within a stretch of the Mosel which is relatively straight, a run of south-facing vineyards of world renown – within Zeltingen, Wehlen, Graach and Bernkastel.

    TASTING NOTES

A complex, textured nose of petrol, flinty minerality and firm white stone-fruit, with lemony zest. The fore-palate is powerfully ripe and expressive (this would pass for a Spätlese with ease), yet kept in check by a salty minerality from the mid-palate to the finish. This comes to an admirably precise point, with lingering salinity. Really lovely wine.

As soon as it does open up, the variety of aromas is almost overwhelming. It is underlined by a lively acidity and minerality so typical of the Doctor vineyard site. It is an extremely complex wine with tremendous aging potential.

'Light, bright yellow colour, with a lifted mineral fragrance evoking slate, crushed river-stones and honey, the honey becoming very apparent in the mouth. The balance is superb and the acidity seamless. The wine combines unusual richness and depth of flavour with refinement and delicacy, the palate flavour very harmonious and persisting for a long time. A top wine.'

'I love the ripe peachy fruit of this wine. Behind that, there's a great mineral structure that effortlessly carries the long and elegant finish. Impeccable balance.'

'The 2017er Berncasteler Doctor Kabinett offers a wonderfully complex and refined nose of white flowers, spices, whipped cream, minty herbs, earl grey and vanilla. The wine is ethereally light and refined on the palate, where it delivers some Kabinett precision and finesse with great multi-layered complexity. The finish is all about finesse, delicacy and refinement. This is a great Kabinett in the making. 2027-2042'

'Pristine, sun-kissed white peach and grapefruit flavors are jolted by lightening strikes of lemon and lime in this irresistibly lip-smacking wine. It's intensely juicy and concentrated yet breathless and weightless on the palate. A gorgeous wine already that should improve through 2027.'
