DESCRIPTION
  • Beginning with meticulous site selection and vineyard design started in 1991, Felton Road's story is one of refusal to compromise. 100% organic and biodynamic viticulture ensures that their fruit arrives at the winery as pure as it can be. A commitment to hands off winemaking helps to preserve the wine's expression of its terroir. The result is Pinot Noir, which accurately express the authenticity and complexity of the Felton Road vineyards.

Vintage after vintage Felton Road deliver exemplary wines that typify the Central Otago region. For anyone who has never tried these stunning wines, prepare to be converted.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

The unique gravity flow winery enabled the grapes to be gently destemmed directly into open-top fermenters without pumping, retaining 21% as whole clusters. Traditional fermentation with a moderately long maceration on skins has extracted good colour and tannin with considerable depth of flavour. This wine was aged for 13 months in 22% new French oak barrels from artisan Burgundian coopers. In accordance with our non-interventionalist approach to winemaking, this wine was fermented with indigenous yeast and was not fined or filtered.

    TASTING NOTES

The aroma leads to a bright and lifted combination of red and dark fruits with considerable florals. On the palate, there is a combination of transparency, power and tension. The silky entry of spice and savoury notes expand to pure, deep fruits, braced with acidity, but luscious throughout. The frame is a finely woven latticework: intricate and detailed with a strong sense of longevity. This exemplary wine is a blend of four properties that elegantly expresses the graceful and more subtle side of Pinot Noir from Bannockburn.

'Perfume of thyme and flowers, plum and cherry, vanilla and spiced biscuits. Full flavoured, creamy vanilla oak in support, herbal mouth-perfume, clean acidity, open weave tannin pushes out on the finish. Really lovely. Flavour with finesse. Tasty and seductive.'
95 Points - Gary Walsh, Wine Front

'Aromatic pinot noir with spice, plum and violet aromas that are joined by liquorice, prune and subtle nutty oak on the palate. Dense, intense wine with strong sweet fruit restrained by subtle tannins. A rich, almost chewy wine, with impressive underlying power. Best served slightly chilled to temper fruit sweetness.'

    95 Points - Bob Campbell

'Complex, brambly red-cherry and red-plum aromas with a lightly sappy, forest-floor edge. The palate has a super smooth array of vibrant red cherries and a clearly defined, layered texture.'
