  • We sometimes forget that the Yarra Valley is known for producing exception Cabernet blends (think Yeringberg, Yarra Yering and of course Mount Mary) so why not let Giant Steps take a punt at it too? Well it turns out that the Harry's Monster, a blend of Cabernet (54%) Merlot (33%) & Petit Verdot (13%) has been produced for over 14 years by Giant Steps, and the 2017 is just another of a long line of cracking Cabernet releases from Steve Flamsteed and Phil Sexton's incredible winery.

Like the eminently savoury and pencil thin medium-weighters of the above big Yarra namesakes, this is another example of the classic savoury Yarra dry red style. Olives, leather, graphite, blood plum all tangle in a web of silken tannins, and a leafy/mulchy tang. This is a beautiful gossamer thread of a wine, and from a vintage that perfectly suited the long-ripening timeframe of Cabernet, and its stablemates Petit Verdot and Merlot. This is like a classic Swiss time-piece; dependable, with high-craftsmanship, and after drinking it, you too will find it just ticking along nicely. More please!

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

Each variety was hand picked and vinified separately. All varieties were destemmed and partially crushed before being tipped into small open fermenters for a natural fermentation. The ferments were given lots of air via gravity drain and returns during the fermentation period. Total maceration time was 14 days. The wine was pressed off to French oak barriques for malolactic fermentation and maturation for 14 months (12% new oak - 88% used oak).

2017 really was a sensational vintage! Good intermittent rainfall with cool to mild temperatures, and not a day over 40 degrees during the summer months marked 2017 out as a classic cool climate vintage. All varieties came in later than average, ripening at an unhurried pace in these ideal growing conditions, producing wines of incredible structure, detail and length.

    TASTING NOTES

Wonderfully complex aromas of blackcurrant, mulberry and rhubarb, lifted by spice and pencil shavings, and underpinned by a herbal, savoury feel. The palate is structured and elegant showing concentration and restraint, and finely detailed too. Will reward careful cellaring. Excellent.
