  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Alan Hickinbotham established the vineyard bearing his name in 1971 when he planted dry- grown cabernet sauvignon and shiraz in contoured rows on the sloping site. He was a very successful builder, this his first venture into wine, but his father, Alan Robb Hickinbotham, had a long and distinguished career, co-founding the oenology diploma at Roseworthy in ’36. In 2012 Clarendon, and the stately sandstone house on the property, was purchased by Jackson Family Wines; it is run as a separate business from Yangarra Estate Vineyard, with different winemaking teams and wines. The Hickinbotham Clarendon Vineyard covers a steep cut of country from the ridgetops above the village of Clarendon to the Onkaparinga River in the gorge below. Since its establishment in 1971, the Hickinbotham vineyard has become a part of Australia’s wine heritage, supplying fruit to produce many of Australia’s greatest wines. The Clarendon Vineyard has sold select parcels to Penfolds for Grange and to Hardy’s for their equivalent white flagship, the Eileen Hardy Chardonnay.

GARY WALSH - THE WINE FRONT

377 dozen made. Second release of a Grenache from Hickinbotham, though the vineyard is old. Slightly reductive on opening, then into all that spice and dried herb perfume, raspberry, strawberry, and a scoop of brown earth. Medium-bodied, fresh, savoury tasting rather than fruity, a little roast lamb and thyme/rosemary thing going on, firm sandy tannin, really pushing out on the finish with exceptional length and drive. Go McLaren Vale Grenache.

NED GOODWIN - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

Sourced from a single plot of old bushvines dating from '62 at 252m, the fruit was fully destemmed before individual berry sorting, indicative of the resources at the disposal of the Jackson Family stable. Extraction, more European than Australian, with three punchdowns daily across a 10-day extraction period, before 7 months in neutral Burgundian coopered oak, has ensured a prism of savouriness. The result is thoroughly convincing and highly complex. Black olive, cherry liqueur and raspberry bonbon notes are wrapped in the herbal bosom of tannic twine. A gentle rasp, mind you, rather than an aggressive scrape. Delicious wine. Captivating and very long.

HUON HOOKE - THE REAL REVIEW

Bright, medium red/purple hue, with a fresh fragrance of raspberry and blueberry, mixed spices and flowers. It's light-bodied and light in tannin, a fruit-driven but quite detailed wine of great aromaticity and charm.
