La Tour des Bancs is made by Vignerons du Vieux Tinailler whose story begins at the onset of the Great Depression when, in 1929, a handful of Beaujolais winemakers, touched by the crisis, decided to combine their forces to weather better the economic storm. Down the years, the cellar’s capacity and production have grown.
Overlooked by Mont du Py, the plots of "roche pourrie" (rotten rock) made up of very ancient schist and volcanic rock are shared between 6 very distinct named vineyards or ‘climats', the most famous of which is Côte du Py.
This wine to lay down is suited to 5 to 10 years' cellaring, Morgon is maybe the Cru that best expresses its terroir. So much so that the winemakers here have invented a special word to describe what it does on reaching it peak; Morgon is said to "morgonne". A verb that has been adopted by many wine specialists.
Fragrant red fruit, with dark cherries and a hint of spice, the mid palate carrying some darker herbal flavours and drying tannins. Serious for Beaujolais
Vignerons du Vieux Tinailler’s vineyards cover 14 Beaujolais appellations among which are 10 crus. Except for Chardonnay, cultivated for Beaujolais Blanc, Bourgogne and Côteaux Bourguignons, Gamay is the unique grape variety planted in the region of Beaujolais.
