Mandala is the vision of the Smedley family of Melbourne. An estate vineyard in Yarra Junction was planted in 1999, with additional vineyards following in Dixons Creek. Specialising in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Mandala wines are high quality, elegant and exceptional value.
Destemmed and transferred into an open screen press, pressed off and transferred to barrel with high solids, no batonage. 100% natural ferment, with 20% malolactic fermentation.
Bursting lime zest, fresh peach and apricot aromas are lifted with notes of almond and savoury tones. A crisp, sherbet acidity leads to a silky mid-palate texture that rounds out with soft notes of lemon, nutty nougat and French oak.
Established by the Smedley family, Mandala Wines is a five-star James Halliday-rated Yarra Valley winery. The main site and Cellar Door at Dixon's Creek offers a full range of prized Estate wines for tasting, along with its renowned assortment of single-site wines. It was the family's favourite wines which lead them to the Yarra Valley region; Charles' love of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay plus the region's famous sublime cool climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, made it the perfect choice. But Mandala have also established Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot vines too. With ther sites only an hour from Melbourne, it really was the best place to unearth Mandala and make the wines they love to drink. Today Mandala is thriving within its beautiful Yarra Valley country setting, where their kids play and older ones spend time together, tell stories and enjoy the good life. The Smedley family want Mandala to be their legacy for the future generations, and to be indulged by whomever catches the wine bug.
Reserved, faintly nutty lees and sulfide bouquet, smoky and creamy, with evident oak. The palate is dry and savoury, clean, intense and lingering, with a trace of phenolic grip. Very good wine. '
CAMPBELL MATTINSON - THE WINE FRONT
Chardonnay from Dixon's Creek in the Yarra Valley. All fermented wild. 20% mlf. Bottled in November 2017 so it wasn't in oak for any great long time. Low alcohol style though it serves up a decent amount of flavour. This is good to drink. It tastes of pears and peaches, citrus too, with oatmeal and custard-cream aspects cooing over the top. It's not a punchy or weighty style but it's juicy and more-ish. There's a whisper of stuck match too; not much but enough. Nice one. '
