  • THE BRIEF
  • Established in 1972 , Mountadam High Eden Estate is one of Australia's oldest cool climate Chardonnay vineyards. Situated on a unique rocky outcrop the estate commands an easterly aspect over Eden Valley. All fruit used to craft this wine is grown on the estate.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • The growing season started with a wet winter and spring to completely replenish soil moisture. Spring and early summer temperatures were mild and below average, resulting in a long, even ripening phase and a later than usual start to harvest. Harvest commenced in the third week of March, with the last parcel being harvested on the 11th of April.

The juice was fermented in 50% new French barriques, the balance in 1 and 2 year old barrels. The wine was intermittently stirred (battonage) throughout the maturation period. The individual parcels were matured in barrel for an average of 12 months.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

On release the wine is pale gold in colour. It has aromas of white peach, nectarine and fresh figs. French oak barrel fermentation and maturation gives the wine secondary aromas of cashew nuts and mixed spices. The palate has a complex mix of stone fruit, citrus, cashew nuts, and spice. The mid palate is round and creamy but a clean citrus like acid backbone provides length and persistence to the wine. The wine is complex with no single character dominating the wine. The flavour of the wine persists long after it has left the mouth.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Mountadam was first setup in 1972 by the late David Wynn, a pioneer of the wine industry an founder of Wynns Coonawarra Estate. Wynn made the winery famous on the back of superb cool climate wines, supported by his son Adam (who the winery is named after). Adam held onto the winery until 2002 when it was sold to luxury goods business LVMH. The winery returned to family hands again in 2006 when it was purchased by South Australian farmer and accountant David Brown and his wife Jenni. In late 2015 the Browns acquired the second High Eden vineyard established by Wynn. The two vineyards are dissected by High Eden road. The Brown family are keen to continue Wynn's vision to produce wines of elegance and structure. A focus on sustainable low input viticulture will guarentee the success of the vineyards into the future. From 2015, Helen McCarthy has steered the ship as Chief Winemaker.

NED GOODWIN - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

Mountadam, a proud estate, has surged back into top gear over the last few years, crafting some truly stellar wines. I love the use of oak here. Not shy, following 12-14 months in barrique, it nevertheless serves as an adjunct, toning the cavalcade of stone fruit flavours while providing welcome signposts for the savoury, exceptionally long, solidsy/nutty finish. The acid is a plume. Juicy and palate-whetting. As Burgundian as Australia gets.

    HUON HOOKE

Light yellow hue, and a sweet peach-nectar aroma, which is clean, fresh and bright. There's a light patina of smoky oak. The wine is similar in the mouth, and is generous and straightforward, although there's plenty of flavour and a clean, dry finish. It's quite full-bodied and ample, and will only become more opulent with more time in the bottle.
