Having just been bottled, we're delighted to be able to offer first access to the astounding 2017 Vintage Port from Niepoort.
Niepoort has been an independent family business since 1842. Through five generation the business has passed from one Niepoort to the next and in most cases the older and younger generations worked side by side for a long period. The fifth generation, Eduard Dirk Niepoort is now head of the business, and producing some spectacular Port wines.
The 2017 Vintage Ports - just bottled in June 2019 - are already creating a buzz. Niepoort, among others, has declared 2017 an 'epic' vintage, and one whose resulting wines will be very long-lived. Predicting that “this is a wine that will age forever”, Dirk Niepoort’s 2017 Vintage shows a seamless balance, concentrated with firm but very fine tannins, and with a purity and elegance throughout, backed by great acidity.
In Dirk's words, this is "the best wine I’ve ever done." Don't miss this one.
Please note the bottle size is 375ml.
2017 will be remembered for its intense heat and record low levels of rainfall. In spite of the dry weather, flowering and bud burst developed under good conditions, and in August and September the high day temperatures and cool nights allowed for even and gradual ripening. The decision to start harvesting early, at optimum ripeness, allowed us to harvest grapes in ideal condition, with fantastic natural acidity. At the Vale de Mendiz winery, harvest began on 24 August under perfect weather conditions, with musts displaying intense colour and a powerful character. The last grapes were harvested on 26 September. Yields were down by approximately 30% compared to a normal year, essentially due to water stress.
All the fruit for the 2017 Vintage Port were foot-trodden in circular granite lagares with 100% whole bunches. The wines were racked soon after harvest, aged in tonéis (large barrels) in the Douro over the winter, and then moved to the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia in March 2018.
A wonderful dark purple rim and great depth of colour characterise the wine’s appearance. The aromatic profile is dominated by superb youthful dark fruit. It is powerful on the initial attack, leading into a fresh mid-palate with beautifully seductive flavours of dark fruit. A great combination of power and elegance, ending in a bold, dry, lengthy and slightly green tannic finish. The length and structure of the 2017 vintage promise a long-lived wine with great ageing potential.

All from Cima Corgo. All field blends, including Touriga Franca, Tinto Cão, Tinta Francisca, Tinta Amarela, Sousão, Tinta Roriz, etc, oldest vines 80–100 years. Any overripe grapes removed. 100% foot trodden with 100% stems. Press wine very important – like ‘gold’, says Niepoort. Not from all the vineyards just from his four favourite, eg Pisca. To be bottled June 2019. Black cherry colour with narrow purple rim. Gorgeous pure hedgerow black fruit and no sense of the alcohol on the nose – it has been completely integrated with the fruit already. Ripe blackberry, elderberry and blackcurrant and a touch of spice, wild fruit. Incredibly intense on the palate but not showy and the tannins make it taste almost dry. Wonderful texture, great freshness, the tannins ‘sweep the sweetness out of the mouth’, as Mondavi once said to Niepoort. Incredible purity, freshness, intensity and harmony. I’ve put a start date of 2025 but this is ridiculously delicious now even though it clearly has massive potential longevity. An incredible dark, rocky purity with a long savoury finish, the fruit is intense but not ultra-fruity. This reminds me of the rocky Douro from which the wines come. Sheer beauty with hidden power. Glorious, very long, totally moreish even now. 19.5 / 20 Points.
