2017 Oakridge Local Vineyard Series Henk Vineyard Chardonnay

If the aromas of flint, chalk, sandstone, dried white blossoms, white peppers, dried nutmeg, acacia and dried citrus peel don’t grab your attention, then nothing will. This does about everything right for a cool-climate chardonnay'

  • Debut release of Oakridge's latest Vineyard Series Chardonnay, and this one might just be the finest yet. The Henk vineyard has been a pet project of the Oakridge team, and in 2017 we finally see the fruits of their labour.

This is phenomenal winemaking from one of the country's most prodigious talents and having only been released for a little while, it has already racked up 97 Points from James Suckling, and two gold medals at the Melbourne and Yarra Valley Wine Shows.

David Bicknell and his coterie of winemakers and viticulturists have been given free reign to take the fruit of this mighty Woori Yallock vineyard, and in 2017, when all the myriad of clones and older vines have come in to play, they have released an absolutely stunning debut effort.

Sourced from a plot that sits on the border of Woori Yallock and Hoddles Creek, and grown on the red volcanic soils of the Upper Yarra, this is a special site and is thoroughly deserving of the complete Oakridge treatment. Traditional, hands-off winemaking is the key to encapsulating this terroir, and it shows in the final result.

It's a wine of substantive power, but with such a slippery ease to drink. Acacia, nettle, marzipan dominate on the nose, with the usual coterie of citrus, grass and green apple providing the fruit. It's undulating, with different flavours bouncing around the palate as you lock horns with it, and yet it all finishes with a flourish

There a very few wines or Chardonnay in Australia that can come close to touching this 2017 Henk Chardonnay, at any price point. This wine should be at the front and centre of everyone's collective consciousness, no matter what your tastes.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

A traditional winemaking approach was used to produce this wine – handpicking and whole bunch pressing directly to 500 litre French oak puncheons for a natural fermentation followed by 10 month maturation on lees.

The Yarra Valley has three distinct geographic zones or sub-regions - lower warmer, middle cool and higher cooler sub-regions. We have matched particular varieties with the specific sites to give you outstanding examples of single vineyard wines.

    Alcohol - 13%

    TASTING NOTES

Perfectly pitched, floral driven Chardonnay with citrus as its backbone, and an overwhelming feeling of place and vintage. Nougat, chalk, nettle. Grapefruit pith, green apple turnover cake, baking spices. Lots going on, nothing short or missing a beat. This will unravel over years.

  • REVIEWS

'A standout vineyard with what feels like a strong influence of terroir. If the aromas of flint, chalk, sandstone, dried white blossoms, white peppers, dried nutmeg, acacia and dried citrus peel don’t grab your attention, then nothing will. This does about everything right for a cool-climate chardonnay, marrying a strong center palate of textured citrus fruit and spicy complexity with an ethereally long line of acidity and pith. First commercially available vintage of this stunning site in the Yarra. Amazing now but better in 2025.'
