2017 Oakridge Local Vineyard Series Henk Vineyard Pinot Noir

2017 Oakridge Local Vineyard Series Henk Vineyard Pinot Noir

Aromas are in the cool red-cherry and fragrant zone with crushed roses and violets. Some fresh sappy notes of undergrowth, too. The palate has a long, refined and succulent mouthfeel, which really marries elegance with power.'

DESCRIPTION
  • The Henk Vineyard series Pinot Noir is a brand new project for the Oakridge team, with this being the second ever vintage of the wine. Sourced from a single-site in the Woori Yallock sub-region of the Yarra Valley (not far from the border of Hoddles Creek), this special patch of red volcanic dirt gets the Oakridge and David Bicknell treatment, and will soon be one of the most important vineyards in the flock of sites Oakridge continue to take fruit from.

In 2017, the entire vineyard has come in to play, with the myriad of old-vine fruit and multitude of different clones finally getting to play their part. This is nothing short of a miraculous fruit-powered wine. Sinewy and floral, with red berries, cherry and blueberry, the sappy undercurrent and rosebush notes also providing a much-needed lift. It is very much in the more pretty and resonant camp for Pinot Noir, but has some power and consistency of length to back it up. This wine will make people swoon, and is just the ultimate reminder of the talents of Oakridge, and the veritable array of different styles of wine the Yarra can produce.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

A traditional winemaking approach was used to produce this wine – whole berry fermentation in open vessels for two weeks followed by an 10 month maturation in French oak barrels.

'This site delivers a zipped-up, sleek, concentrated pinot. Aromas are in the cool red-cherry and fragrant zone with crushed roses and violets. Some fresh sappy notes of undergrowth, too. The palate has a long, refined and succulent mouthfeel, which really marries elegance with power. Drink or hold.'

'Tried this at the winery a couple of months ago, and it’s settling into bottle very well. The Henk vineyard is in Woori Yallock. Red cherry, red fruits, spice, vanilla and flowers. Fresh, pretty style of wine, almost delicate, with sappy red fruits, a smudge of fine grained tannin, balanced acidity, and a bright but savoury finish of good length. Thoroughly charming.'

'Medium to full red/purple, bright and limpid colour. The bouquet is savoury with some 'forest floor' and dusty dried herb nuances, the palate intense and brisk, with firm acidity and some sharpness, but it's young and in need of time. It's very bright and almost nervy on the tongue, focused and precise, with good intensity if not richness or fleshiness. A keeper.'
