  • THE BRIEF
  • Sourced from the estate Malpas Road Vineyard, planted in 1991, the name 'Cracking Black' is a reference to the relatively infertile grey-black soil of the once named 'Bay of Biscay,' that cracks as it dries in the warmer months. The fissures that occur as the black soil cracks apart, sever surplus root structure, which naturally lessens plant vigour, and enhances fruit quality.

The resulting 2017 Shiraz is beautifully dark-fruited with layers of spice and finely integrated mocha oak. It displays depth and generosity on the palate, and is a standout in terms of value.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • To best reflect the variation in terroir across the vineyard sites, each Shiraz parcel was harvested, fermented and matured separately. Harvest commenced on the 14th March and the last parcel was picked on the 8th April. After 7-10 days on skins in open or static fermenters, wines were pressed and filled immediately to the finest French oak barrels. Each parcel was matured for 17 months prior to barrel selection and blending. The final blend consisted of 15% new French oak barrels and wine was bottled in November 2018.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Oozing with cherry and dark berry fruits, this spicy McLaren Vale Shiraz is layered with mocha, oak spice and licorice with finely integrated oak. Showing great depth and generosity, the palate is elegant and well defined. The tannins delicately wrap the fruit and guide it along the palate, resulting in a wine of exceptional length and character.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • From its first production of 141 cases of 1995 Shiraz, Penny's Hill has established a fine reputation for outstanding vineyards from which acclaimed estate wines have emerged. Very much a part of the recent McLaren Vale landscape, the Penny's Hill story commenced in 1988 with the purchase of the original vineyard site. The brand message: "Proudly Australian. More so McLaren Vale."

Winemaker Alexia Roberts consistently produces fine, full-bodied, fruit driven wines using premium estate-grown fruit from some of the best quality vineyards in the region. A meticulous approach every step of the way, from the narrow-planted, low yielding vineyards and throughout the winemaking process, Alexia’s wines deliver the ultimate balance of texture, complexity and interest.

JAMES HALLIDAY - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

    SAM KIM - WINE ORBIT

This is gracefully powerful, packed with gorgeous flavours; the wonderfully fragrant bouquet shows blackberry, blueberry compote, game, cedar and vanilla characters with a touch of floral lift. It is concentrated and wonderfully weighted, delivering fabulous fruit purity and intensity, backed by loads of polished tannins.

CAMPBELL MATTINSON - THE WINE FRONT

It’s both generously flavoured and complex. That’s a great start. It finishes dry but there’s ample ripe fruit in the getting there, and there’s also plenty of smoky, spicy, clovey character layered on top. It keeps you interested. It doesn’t extend out through the finish in the way this winery’s higher priced reds do but then, for casual drinking you’re hardly likely to notice.

    HUON HOOKE

Very deep, dark red colour with a purple tint; aromas of meaty charcuterie, black fruits and tar. It's rich and fruit-sweet in the middle-palate before a wash of black tea tannins on the back-palate and finish. Concentration, density and grip all in equal measure. This would take some age well and is remarkable value for money within this maker's portfolio.
