  • Shaw + Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw. They make wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills, from varieties that suit the cooler climate: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Shaw + Smith own two vineyards, in Lenswood and Balhannah. Growing the best possible grapes, managing vineyards sustainably, and valuing vine health, soil health, and low yields are central to the Shaw + Smith approach. In the pursuit of quality, all grapes continue to be hand-picked, and the wines are fermented, aged and bottled on site at Balhannah. The wines are vibrant, medium bodied expressions of their varieties that reflect their sites and region.

This is undoubtedly one of the best chardonnays in Australia. Serious and built to last, it’s refined and elegant and made with true craftsmanship, using wild ferments and allowing the fruit to shine. Stone fruit, lemon zest and grapefruit are at the heart of this white combined with subtle biscuity notes. It’s intense and weighty, balanced by fresh, crisp acid. Trophy winner for Best Chardonnay in Show at the Adelaide Hills Wine Show 2018.

  • WINEMAKER'S NOTES

French oak barriques and puncheons. There was record rainfall throughout the growing season but importantly it reduced to average in November during flowering and was dry during March, the later part of ripening. Record low temperatures were also recorded resulting in a late, very cool vintage. Flavours are intense and the natural acidity is striking.

    TASTING NOTES

Aiming for elegance, restraint and the ability to age, acid is bright and there’s generosity of flavour. Typically it shows white flowers, citrus, and nectarine notes.

    Reviews for 2016 vintage

'So much flavour packed into this chardonnay, but never loses focus or detail. Pristine and perfectly ripe fruit, a mix of stone fruit and citrus folded into creamy lees, and ginger notes with a liberal seasoning of integrated French oak spice. A fuller-bodied palate, texture and complexity with ultra-refreshing acidity. No point waiting.'

95 Points - Jane Faulkner, Halliday's Wine Companion (2016 vintage)

'These M3 chardies are achieving such wonderful consistency. Another very good wine opens with a compelling mix of butterscotch and stone fruit on the nose, with some subtle savoury charry influences. The palate is layered, with a sustained finish of power and focus.'
95 Points - Ray Jordan, Weekend West (2016 vintage)

'Despite the warm year, this chardonnay has impressive reserve, with the hard-to-achieve mix of elegance and intensity. It is youthful and primary right now, with room to grow over time. A complex wine with bright, lemony fruit. The winemaking stamp is sophisticated yet subtle.'
95 Points - Toni Paterson, The Real Review (2016 vintage)

'Pleasant level of stuck match sulphide, grapefruit, white peach, cinnamon and spice, almond etc. Fine, tight, slight creaminess and almond flavour, crisp exit, some grapefruit and green apple on a pacy and racy finish. Delicious wine. A little Country & Western here, and very good too. Was even thinking about 95 points.'
94 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front (2016 vintage)
