  • THE BRIEF
  • Shaw + Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw. They make wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills, from varieties that suit the cooler climate: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz.

Shaw + Smith own two vineyards, in Lenswood and Balhannah. Growing the best possible grapes, managing vineyards sustainably, and valuing vine health, soil health, and low yields are central to the Shaw + Smith approach. In the pursuit of quality, all grapes continue to be hand-picked, and the wines are fermented, aged and bottled on site at Balhannah. The wines are vibrant, medium bodied expressions of their varieties that reflect their sites and region.

Pinot Noir is the most temperamental of varieties and remains a challenge for site, season and winemaking - Shaw + Smith has joined the quest albeit in a 'small batch' way. First produced experimentally in 2004 and commercially in 2007. Site selection, the right clonal mix, minuscule yields and fastidious vineyard management are essential to success.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • Handpicked and sorted. Combination of whole berry and whole bunch fermentation. Outstanding quality from a growing season that threatened, at times, to be tricky. After some heat in January, the moderate, dry and sunny months of February and March delivered beautifully balanced fruit. Crop levels were slightly below average, enhancing flavour and intensity.

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

The 2018 vintage has a concentrated core of red berry fruits including raspberries and cherries. It is vibrant and more opulent than other years.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Shaw + Smith own two vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, at Balhannah and Lenswood, totalling 55 hectares. The vineyards are planted to varieties that perform particularly well in the region, namely Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Shaw + Smith was established in 1989 by cousins Michael Hill Smith MW and Martin Shaw. They make wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills, from varieties that suit the cooler climate: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. Shaw + Smith own two vineyards, in Lenswood and Balhannah. Balhannah is also home to the winery where the Tasting Room is open daily. Shaw + Smith's first vintage was in 1990, and the early vintages were made at Wirra Wirra and Petaluma. In 1999 they purchased a property at Balhannah, where they planted vines, and built the winery and tasting room in time for the 2000 vintage. In 2012 they purchased an established 20 hectare vineyard in Lenswood. As the business has grown Michael and Martin have built a formidable team to continue the evolution of Shaw + Smith, including Master of Wine David LeMire, Senior Winemaker Adam Wadewitz, Business Manager Grant Lovelock and Group Viticulturist Murray Leake.

JAMES HALLIDAY - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

It just goes to show that you can be both a jack of all trades and a master of many. This is all of delicate, fragrant, fruit-driven and complex. It's pretty and upfront but it holds its top gear back for the finish. Spices aplenty, florals, rhubarb, garden herb, wood sap. Everything presents immaculately.

Heady aromas of red rose petals, raspberries, cherries and toasty vanilla oak with undertones of smoked bacon precede an elegant, vivacious palate whose layers of brightly lit fruit are underpinned by al dente tannins, extending long and persistent. Setting the standard in South Australia.

The dried-strawberry and orange-peel character here is so enticing and energetic with hints of walnuts and dried flowers. Medium body, light and fine tannins and a crisp finish. Drink now or hold. Screw cap.
