  • THE BRIEF
  • With Tar & Roses’ winemaking inspiration coming from Mediterranean grape varietals,it is not surprising that they excel at Tempranillo. These wines have been traditionally matched in their country of origin with fine foods also sourced from their local area. The wines complement the local fare and have played a role in the cultural fabric of the community for centuries.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • A combination of two vineyards from Heathcote, grapes were crushed and de-stemmed into one static fermenter which was pumped over twice a day. During fermentation the temperature and acid levels were monitored constantly. The wine was pressed to tank using an air bag press then racked off gross lees and transferred to barrel to finish malolactic fermentation. It was left to mature in a combination of new French and older barriques. Don Lewis, Narelle King

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Deep burgundy in colour. Liqueur cherries, cream and coffee on the nose with hints of freshly tilled earth. Rhubarb and black cherries on the palate, plush and round. Well balanced with substantial chalky tannin, the wine finishes rich and long.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Tar & Roses home is in Nagambie Central Victoria and produces wines inspired by classic varietals from the Mediterranean and was named after the signature characteristics of Nebbiolo. The name also ties back to the winemaking team behind the venture, the legendary Don Lewis and his winemaking partner Narelle King. Following the passing of Don in 2017 this represents the final vintage of his great career with Narelle now carrying on the Tar & Roses tradition in 2018 and beyond. Tar & Roses produce one of Australia's leading Pinot Grigios known for its characteristic dusty pink colour. Tar & Roses sources the majority of red fruit from areas across central Victoria such as Heathcote, an ideal region for Italian and Spanish varietals and classic "Australian" Shiraz.

HUON HOOKE - THE REAL REVIEW

Deep, dark red/purple colour, with a graphite and plum jam aroma, a hint of dried fruit, the palate savoury, dry and rich, with abundant tannins, and a slight chewiness to finish. It has weight and grip and also a satisfying fleshy texture.

CAMPBELL MATTINSON - THE WINE FRONT

Medium weight wine but it feels warm, generous and grunty. Tannin is the key here. The wine opens with cherry-plum and cola flavours, adds spice and prune to the mix, and then drives herb-flecked tannin through the back half. There’s warmth, sure, but there’s lots to chew on.
