Established in 1896, Te Mata Estate remains family owned, producing internationally recognized wines exclusively from it's Hawke's Bay vineyards. It
has been at the forefront of the modern rejuvenation of the New Zealand wine scene for the last forty years.
Today, Te Mata Estate is recognized as one of New Zealand's most prestigious wine producers, making nearly 40,000 cases a year of premium wine and exporting to over 42 countries.
First made in 1982, Awatea continues to represent the best of the classic Hawkes Bay Cabernet/ Merlot Blend floral aromas with intense blackberry, currant and dark plum flavours lead to a rich, supple palate with a sustained finish.
The separate parcels of grapes were destemmed before a traditional warm, plunged fermentation and extended maceration on skins. The resulting wines were then run to new and seasoned French oak barrels for 16 months’ ageing. Throughout this time, they were regularly topped and racked. The separate wines were blended in January 2018, then returned to barrel for their second winter. The finished wine was then egg white fined and bottled in October 2018. The final blend is 56% cabernet sauvignon, 39% merlot, 5% cabernet franc.
Ink-dark crimson, Awatea Cabernets/Merlot ’17 glimmers with bright raspberry, cherry and blackberry sparkling over mocha, cedar and spice. Always a favourite expression of fine Hawke’s Bay cabernet, Awatea from 2017 is refreshing and moreish as well as typically elegant. Aromas of red and dark berry fruit, flashes of boysenberry and espresso on the palate, and a classical, super-fine, tannin structure running through to its long finish make Awatea Cabernets/Merlot ’17 a true star.

A temperate maritime climate with low rainfall, due to the rain shadow from mountains to the west, ensures Te Mata’s sites make the most of every vintage. At the heart of Te Mata Estate are the Havelock Hills Vineyards - the first legally-protected vineyards in New Zealand. Te Mata has five sites on these free draining, north-facing slopes. Soils to the east are mostly sandy loam over a sandstone base, and towards the west are sandy loam over a thin layer of clay and a silica pan. The distinctive shape of the hills is due to their comparative youth, in geological terms. At the meeting point of two tectonic plates, sandstone has been pushed up then worn away relatively quickly leaving a landscape of steep and gentle slopes, and terraces ideal for grape-growing. Under vine for over 120 years, and including some of the oldest grape growing sites in New Zealand, the Havelock Hills are protected for their distinct character, special ambience and unique viticultural heritage.

The wine offers splendid juicy fruit attack on the nose, showing dark plum and raspberry coulis characters with nuances of toasted almond, thyme and mixed spice. The palate is succulent and beautifully rounded, offering lovely flow and supple texture. It is wonderfully composed and elegantly expressed with loads of delectable flavours, superbly structured by polished tannins.
