  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Wirra Wirra was originally established in 1894 and though abandoned after several decades of production was revived by the late Greg Trott in 1969. The winery produces exceptional value, fruit driven wine styles that don’t shy away from ripeness, intensity and oak usage. Wirra Wirra is located approximately four kilometres outside of the township of McLaren Vale in the McLaren Vale wine growing region of South Australia. Wirra Wirra source fruit from estate and selected grower vineyards. Wirra Wirra is the core range but the wines are delineated by tiers including Flagship wines, RGT collection, Church Block, Mrs Wrigley range and the entry level Scrubby Rise wines. The production of these wines is overseen by Chief Winemaker Paul Smith, with able assistance from Tom Ravech and Kelly Wellington. The winery employs modern technology and new world technique to produce expressive wines of intensity, bold flavour and McLaren Vale profile.

TONI PATERSON MW - THE REAL REVIEW

Dark red hues with medium intensity. Excellent cherry jam and Turkish Delight aromas. Also, some dark cherry, and a hint of sarsaparilla. The palate is deliciously fleshy, plush, supple and chocolatey, and the tannins are beautifully integrated into the fabric of the wine. This McLaren Vale blend does not disappoint. Top value

    JAMES SUCKLING

This is in good shape in this vintage with very clear cabernet cassis and blackcurrant aromas, as well as leaves and red fruit. The palate has a very evenly paced build with layers of tannin and a smooth, juicy and deep finish. A blend of 52{57fad9ee61bf918aa52920273f359c8e536a71964db5ab5f07ccf141889f9eaa} cabernet sauvignon 39{57fad9ee61bf918aa52920273f359c8e536a71964db5ab5f07ccf141889f9eaa} shiraz and 9{57fad9ee61bf918aa52920273f359c8e536a71964db5ab5f07ccf141889f9eaa} merlot. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

GARY WALSH - THE WINE FRONT

Cabernet 52% with Shiraz 39% and a bit of Merlot. Good smelling wine we have here with mixed berries, cedar, a whiff of vanilla. Medium-bodied crisp acidity, a mix of red and black fruits with some cuddly vanilla oak, light powdery feeling tannin, decent finish. Does the trick. Or meets expectations in corporate parlance.

    JEREMY OLIVER

Spotless and well-made with bright, pastille-like small black and red berries knit with smoky vanilla oak and backed by mint, dried herbs and supple tannins.

JAMES HALLIDAY - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

A 52/32/9% blend, matured in 70% French and 30% American barriques for 18 months. A pleasant blend for those remnant cabernet drinkers.

HUON HOOKE - THE REAL REVIEW

Dark chocolate and rich red fruits greet the nose. The wine is medium to full-bodied and balanced, smooth and rich, if not all that complex. A solid mouthful of gutsy, straightforward, slightly chewy red wine.

    CHRISTINA PICKARD - WINE ENTHUSIAST

This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Mourvèdre shows the Cab more than any other variety. It leads with aromas of red berries, mocha, ground pepper, graphite and an herbal savory streak. Those Cab-like graphite and leafy notes follow through to the palate, which is soft and rounded in texture with herb-flecked tannins and a bit of a bitter finish.
