  • THE BRIEF
  • Yabby Lake's philosophy is to craft single vineyard wines of great purity and character, reflective of the time and place in which it was grown. It’s the attention and care in the vineyard that is most critical to allowing this expression. The 2017 vintage is a classic in the making. A mild but windy spring led into a cool summer and extended autumn. The wines are classically proportioned and destined for a long life.

  • THE FINER DETAILS
  • The fruit was handpicked and gently de-stemmed into traditional oak open fermenters. A small portion of whole bunches (10%). The 2017 vintage is a classic in the making. A mild but windy spring led into a cool summer and extended autumn. The wines are classically proportioned and destined for a long life. The palate is concentrated and silky, with finely structured tannins, bright fruit characters, wonderful elegance and depth. Tom Carson

    WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

Bursting with herby, spicy aromas, you can also detect notes of licquorice and black pepper. It tastes of berries red and black, nuts and a hints of graphite. Perfectly paired with a juicy filet mignon.

  • WHO MADE IT?
  • Yabby Lake Vineyard was established by the Kirby family in 1998, in Tuerong, which is located in the northern part of Mornington Peninsula. Over the past decade, the vineyard has built a reputation for single vineyard chardonnay and pinot noir of great purity and character. Led by winemaker Tom Carson, their philosophy is to craft wines that speak of site and season. It’s the attention and care in the vineyard that is most critical to allowing this expression. Careful site selection and an unyielding pursuit of quality have quickly elevated Yabby Lake into an upper echelon of producers in the region. Their vision and dedication has lead to some exciting accolades in recent years, including the history-making Block 1 Pinot Noir - the first pinot noir ever to win the revered Jimmy Watson Trophy, after 52 years of the award. The Yabby Lake is located in the Moorooduc sub-region of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula wine growing region. The first vineyards were planted at Red Hill. Yabby Lake produces premium wines with a focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The wines have a nod in the direction of the wines of Burgundy in France, but do still show unashamed bright Australian fruit flavours and textures. A Shiraz and Pinot Gris is also produced. Yabby Lake is the core brand but there is an association with Heathcote Estate from Heathcote, and the Red Claw and Cooralook wine ranges. A state of the art winery employs modern technique to carefully sort selected fruit. Though high technology comes into play, a reverence for old world wine making allows the fruit to express itself in more natural terms. Minimal intervention and winemaking artifice are secondary to quality fruit.

CAMPBELL MATTINSON - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION

Deft use of whole bunches and quality French oak haven't hurt, but the fruit here is of deliciously high quality. This is another fantastic release under this label. Garden herbs, nuts, twigs and spice notes blend seamlessly with red and black cherries, licorice and wood smoke. Flamboyance is its middle name, but it has the discipline to make the most of it.

CAMPBELL MATTINSON - THE WINE FRONT

A wonderful wine. Polished, powerful, characterful and satisfying. It tastes of nuts, smoked herbs, berries red and black, graphite and a dry, almost savoury version of licorice straps. Full array of flavours and scents and bright with them too. Utterly seductive, and impressive.

    JEREMY OLIVER

Medium to full-bodied, spicy and savoury; peppery dark berries, cherries and plums with chocolatey oak and charcuterie undertones.

    HUON HOOKE

Deepish purple/red colour, with a meaty overtone to its raw blueberry fruit nuances. The wine is medium-bodied and softly fleshy in texture, the flavours having matured just enough to be interesting despite the wine's extreme youth. Very stylish. Some spice on the palate. Fine grained tannins. Dare I say a Rhone-ish style.

    TONY LOVE

The syrah handle is used mostly to define shiraz grown and crafted in a more cool-climate setting. This stylish and silky style bursts with fragrance wafting with a herbal/spicy floral note like sage and thyme to begin, then a sense of licorice and black pepper that adds a delicious complexity and intensity to the flavour profile. It's rich without weightiness and has an engaging length. Really tasty. 4.5 Stars'
