Newly added to the incredible Deep Woods Reserve line up, the Block 7 Shiraz is arguably the Margaret River's best example of the varietal. With 5 massive trophies under its belt at the Royal Perth Wine Show, you will not find any better.
A true favourite of the Deep Woods’ winemaking team. Each batch of fruit was handled individually, from picking through to the final blend being chosen. Techniques of whole bunch fermentation and cold soaking were used to varying degrees, depending on the batch and a combination of open and static fermenters were used. Maturation was in tight-grained François Frères Burgundian oak, for an average of 14 months, at which time only the very best barrels were chosen for the finished wine.
Deep purple hue with brilliant crimson highlights. Lifted nose, exhibiting warm spices such as cinnamon and star anise, with deep, dark blackberry fruits providing the base note. Flavours of dark plum and rich spice. ‘Christmas cake’ like in its intensity and complexity, but simultaneously joyous and fresh. The structure is super fine, almost chamois like. Tannins are elegant and provide a long and expressive palate. A modern expression of Margaret River Shiraz at its best.
Deep Woods Estate was founded in the northern end of the beautiful Margaret River region of W.A in 1987. It changed hands in 1992 when the Gould family purchased the winery, and was sold again in 2005. Today, it is part of the Fogarty Wine Group (they also own Lakes Folly, Millbrook and Smithbrook wines). The property nests on a ridge overlooking a sea of Jarrah and Marri trees, hence the name Deep Woods. It boasts 16 hectares of sustainably-managed, low-yielding vineyards segregated into 12 blocks planted to Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Winemaker Julian Langworthy employs traditional and state-of-the-art techniques to craft small batches of wines of impeccable quality under several different labels. The Deep Woods Reserve label is the ultra-premium range made entirely from estate-grown fruit. The Estate range brings beautiful varietal character and vibrancy while offering excellent value for money, whilst the Ebony, Ivory and Harmony label uses estate and locally sourced fruit. Stylistically they range from complex, zesty, nutty Chardonnays through to cassis and chocolate Cabernet Sauvignons displaying Margaret River typicity.
